Rory McDermott, 4, is seen with his Crocs shoes at his home in Vienna, Va., on Friday Sept. 7, 2007. The boy's Croc-clad left foot was caught in an escalator on August 30, 2007. Crocs and other soft-soled shoes, such as flip-flops, can be prone to escalator entrapment. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)

I've read about this news a while ago. AFAIK Singapore has banned croc sandals.

I know there was another incident like this awhile back. I think it was with a little girl getting stuck.

Congrats! You were wearing the most idiotic footwear ever invented in the first place. What did you expect?

Obviously, you've never worn them.

And I would argue the "most idiotic footwear" ever fathomed is the ultra-high heel shoes that women wear.

Being 4 years old, I don't think the kid has much choice in what he wears.

And to digress a little I think the most idiotic footwear (far more idiotic than Crocs or even high heels) were the foot bindings made popular during the Qing Dynasty in China to cripple their women. But this is another topic all together.

But what a topic!

Most Idiotic footwear: slipper-socks. Less traction than wearing nothing at all, can't be used with shoes like normal socks, have no cushioning effect that would make shoes unnecessary. Also make Risky Business type slides impossible.

My kids wear those all the time.

They are very popular as far as sandals go. Is the large number of incidents proportional to the popularity? Or are the percentages of incidents higher with Crocs than other children's shoes? Of course the raw-incident count may be high.... if there are more kids wearing those than other types of foot wear

My kids wear those everywhere. As a responsible parent I TELL my kids to lift up their feet and step over the mechanism at the top/bottom. I go so far as to physically lift them up so they don't "drag" their feet on the end-ramp part. I also make sure they are not too close to the edge.

The foam-rubber on those is very soft and I can see how they can get jammed and caught in an escelator.

Parents are stupid... really stupid.

Both of my young nieces wear them and my sister is well aware of the incidents involving Crocs. She helps both of my nieces get on and off escalators safely. I was told that they're very comfortable.

Not without socks. Bought a pair for a canoeing and found out that the plastic attach points for the backstrap can quickly cause blisters.

Also don't understand all the large holes. Sure they let stuff out, but they also let stuff in. And well, once a fair sized rock gets in and under your foot, it ain't leaving quietly...

Gonne have to disagree with you on that one.

Speaking of excalators, every damn time I go to the store some arsehat parent is letting their kids race up and down the excalators, sometimes jumping the last 10 moving steps. Natural Selection working I guess.
