Hey all. I think I may have found the new holy grail of cheap canalphones. I'm talking about the thus far unmentioned on head-fi: Panasonic RP-HJE300. I picked them up on a whim while in J&R last week and I must say that I am extremely impressed, especially for only $20!

Firstly, looks. These are modeled in the style of the Sony EX90 as can be seen in the picture. The build quality feels nice and most head-fiers will be happy to note that they have a "Y" cable. They come with three sets of tips and a velvety pouch, which is a nice touch in this price range. The most interesting thing about the design is that the tips attach to an oval shaped tube, rather than the normal circular style.

When I first put them in my ears I was pretty happy but not that impressed. They were very comfortable and light but also very bassy. After a few hours of burn-in they really come into their own. The highs come out of hiding and the bass evens out but still provides a nice clean punch. The only thing I found a bit lacking was a slight lack of emphasis on the mid-range but they by no means sounded bad. Isolation was fairly lacking and they remonded me a bit of Vibes in that regard - although IMHO the HJE300s may sound better.

These babies definitely have a purer, more natural sound than the JVC FX33 and I would choose them first for a budget option unless I required better isolation. Because of the lack of isolation they also have less microphonics than other canalphones I've tried.

All in all, the Panasonic RP-HJE300 is a legitimate contender for the top $20 canalphone crown and it also sounds better than many more expensive canalphones I've tried in the past.

The FX33's suck.
Face the facts. They're okay for $20, but definitely not as great as other earphones in the $20 range.
I've seen $10 earbuds that sound way better.

I purchased the HJE500's from fureshi... let us see what happens when they come.

Panasonic is really making some progress with some portable headphones lately. HTX7, this, and the HV21's (the earbuds that sound golden...).

Can't wait to try these as I really liked the HJE 50 and 70's.

Can you compare the sound to any other IEM's?

FX33's are good for the price but they're $20 so that ain't a strong statement.

They sound better than my UR20. Not as good as my KSC75.

I think they make good electronica canalphones. But I don't think they're worth $100 that too many claim.

I agree. I was the first board member to ever post about the FX33 and I was not very impressed. I sold them pretty quickly. They are extremely solidly built for cheapies, though. They did sound somewhat better after substantial burn-in.

The HJE300s are far better sounding than the FX33. I don't have any canalphones to compare them to directly other than my CK7 - which sounds much better. Just based on my memory the HJE300 sounds better than the Razer m100, FX33, FX55, FX77, E2C (IMHO), KEB24, CX300, and perhaps OVC T25. They were also more enjoyable for me than the ER6, although they don't have the same clarity.

Don't forget that other than the CK7 I did not have the opportunity to AB test these with any canalphones. My judgment is simply based on my subjective recollection of canalphones I've owned.

I stand by my well burned in CK7 as the absolute best canalphone I have ever heard. After hundreds of hours of use they seem to get better and better. (Although I still have not tried the Mylar3.) I really can't wait to see how the ER4P sounds next to them.

Do they have any soundstage? Can anyone compare them to MEElectronics M6/M9 or SoundMagic PL21?
