Packing CD's For Moving

I'm planning on moving in about four weeks and I'll be starting to pack soon. I'm sure I'll need several boxes for my CDs and I'm wondering what the best way to pack them is. Should I just place them in boxes as is or should I take special precautions, like lining the boxes with bubble wrap for example? I don't want to end up with a whole bunch of broken jewel cases but at the same time I don't want to go nuts trying to protect them. Provided that they are packed tightly and not shuffling around in the box, would I need extra protection?

I have moved many cd's many times. They weigh a lot so I try to use a smallish box about 1.5 cu ft. maybe even one cu ft. I try to get a box that fits so they are snug and not banging around, two layers deep usually. Other than that I never did anything special and never had even cases get broken. They have gone by truck and ship. I do like to try and use standard shipping boxes so eveything fits into a truck neatly. I think that helps keep damage down and you can often buy used boxes from moving companies.

I wonder is cd stores get any special boxes you could beg from them?

What I've done, and works really well, is to get what we call fish crates - not sure what you call them, the large solid heavy-duty plastic crates with the seperate lid. Anyway you can fit hunderds of CDs in them and allthough they are heavy you know none will get broken. Stack 'em CDs in close. Worked for me.

yes, the plastic fish crates or milk crates wont get crushed like cardboard ones may. i've found some that are suitable for packing vinyl too.

if you are having people do all the moving for you, get some padding coz they might throw your boxed around. if you will do all the work, just put them neatly in a box and dont worry about it

I dont know how many cds you are packing but if I were you I would move my cds and stereo equipment myself. I had people help me the last time I moved but I packed and transported my stereo and cds myself.

I second the motion of moving the delicate stuff yourself.

For moving CDs I managed to get several Kodak roll paper cartons from a film lab I use. Each box fits about 50 CDs stacked on end perfectly in one long row.... like a filing cabinet drawer. They're long (20") two piece boxes (black base + yellow lid) and originally contained a 20" x 150' roll of Kodak Ekatacolour Supra photo paper. I imagine Kodak packages other paper in them as well. Very sturdy. Perhaps if you have a large professional photo lab nearby you could call and ask. Photo labs usually just throw them out. They are perfect for packing/storing CDs.

You might check around for IBM copier paper boxes, the ones with the fitted lid. I've used those for CD packing with good success. Pad with newspaper to prevent shifting.

Harder to find are coffee boxes, 16" by 8" by 7" They hold 55 CD jewel boxes exactly. I got mine from a local coffee supply house when I moved last month. They are easy to handle and stack, and the smaller size made it easy to keep the discs in order.
