I'm interested in investigating op amps by assembling a simple rca in rca out preamp to go between DAC and power amp. Here's a link to the kit I'm looking at: http://www.ebay.com/itm/131151570002 (one of the P7 kits)

Also looking at a number of attainable op amps like the AD 8066.

So my question is, what rating power adapter should I use? It looks like I'd be ok between 12-18v, but what amp rating should I look for?

thanks for any/all help. the op amp thread is HUGE so I'm hoping this isn't too tough a question for all you head-fi'ers.

Would be a better choice then laptop PSU but then we're getting way beyond reasonable especially when paired with that POS pre-amp kit.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think if I get a little farther into this, I'll start sinking more money into that sort of hardware

Also "pos preamp" lol. You don't think it could sound alright?

What's your skillz level?

Would be pretty easy to build that circuit on perfboard.

Yeah that looks pretty similar. That's about what I've seen on audiokarma. And I actually found the fella who designed the kit that I linked earlier, he's on the DIYaudio forum

I'm a bit new to this, so I'm not gonna beat myself up too bad. But I just realized that the P7 board has a DC conversion circuit in it, so it's compatible with 12 0 12 AC, and not with the DC adapter I linked.

So I do need an AC transformer, and I suppose I need to figure out the amp rating I need? I'm assuming it can't be much

Yeah, not much.
Even 100mA would be overkill, the problem is most transformers with current ratings that low are PCB mount (do not have mounting tabs).
