So I've noticed over the past year or so that head-fi as a whole seems to go through phases of super-hyped-up-headphones and in the past few months, the Shure SRH840's were and still are in the spotlight!

I remember browsing here over a year and a half ago, and all the hype was surrounded around the Beyerdynamic DT880 and the AKG K701. It was always a battle of those two and every 5th thread always had a mention of at least one of the two.

Discuss :p

FOTM = flavor of the month. It's a well known phenomenon. That's why you believe your ears and take what other people say for granted (generally newer members with limited experience [though there are exceptions]).

This is the recurring event you speak of.

It's true with just about any new piece of performance electronics you could think of; headphones, DACs, amps, video cards, TVs, video games, cameras, speakers, etc.

Although I do agree that this is generally the case with new equipment, what's different (yet interesting) about head-fi is that the product doesn't have to be new. On several occasions an older pair of headphones suddenly got revived and hyped again. There was a period of 3-4 months when everyone just seemed to be raving about the Alessandro MS1's.

FOTM... I've never heard this term before, but thank you, I'll keep that in mind =]

Maybe this term can be used in economics too. Thanks to you guys I aced that law of diminishing returns question on my economics exam :p

Yep, older pairs achieve FOTM status, too. There was a good spate of it with the K-340 a couple of years ago.

Another interesting phenemenon is when discontinued headphones suddenly become unobtanium, the usual whining ceases, and they become sought-after "classics."

Everything new is always better than last years product.

The 880 and 701 have settled into to hard-core fanboy status, which sporadically ignites FOTM in newbs.

Welcome to head fi: the Baskin-Robbins of FOTM.

It's a typical psychological thing.

We all have headphones that we love to listen to, but the headphones that we own can't possibly live up to our expectations of the headphones we've never heard. When something new that promises to be great shows up, there's excitement because people haven't actually heard them yet.

This is, of course, coming from a newbie Shure 840 owner--though I did A/B them with some Senns and liked them much more.

The Shure840 are in the spotlight because the market for 100-200$ closed backs is very small and the best one out of the crop will always shine. What upsets me is that people are recommending the 840s for MUSICAL experiences when they are not meant for such things. They are Monitor headphones, they are really heavy, and not that comfortable. However they sound just great and has excellent bass, powerful bass. I guess thats why people love them.

I just picked up a Shure 750DJ pro and its superior to the Denon 1001 in every way, but you wont see anyone going nuts for it any time soon. It's the same price and a little less comfy after the ear pads break in. It's all chance really. Depends on how many people pre order it, get it way early and set up a hyped review for many others to buy and post their thoughts. The 840 did just that.

Your pick of any Sennheiser open back from around 80$ and up sounds better than the 840 :p

Musicians call it GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). You don't want to know how much I have spent on bass gear only to realize that the simplest setup is best. Message boards like this certainly increase people's GAS. Everything sounds so good on the board

Probably:
One person's (or a few peoples') review of something will lead to another few people wanting the said reviewed item. Of these few people, maybe a smaller few will impulse buy and some of the others will ask questions about them. These impulse buyers will love their new product and post lots about them. Rinse and repeat.

I notice if i stay away from head-fi for a while, satisfaction from my headphones go up :p. Perhaps it should be a well-known audio tweak? :p
