So I was at Best Buy yesterday buying a hard drive and I stopped by the headphone section...While I was perusing their selection of mostly Skullcandy, Sonys, and Bose, an employee approached with another customer. Their exchange was like this:
(This is very much paraphrased as I wasn't paying 100% attention until the employee talked about the Beats...)

Customer: I want a nice high quality pair of headphones.
Best Buy Employee: I would recommend the Dr. Dre Beats. They are far and away the best headphones on the market!

... I walked away at this point so I did not hear the rest of the exchange. Best headphones on the market? Wow.

I always jump in when I hear this. It's pretty fun when the employee is actually willing to listen to my explanations of their flawed logic. Most BB employees just don't know any better.

I do it in the computer section, too.

I guess most employees don't have much knowledge with headphone, they are trained to recommend certain brands. Unless they also have a passion for headphones, even in that case I don't think they can recommend brands that BB stores dont carry.

I was in Best Buy a few months ago and decided to see if they had some of the higher-end offerings (e.g. Sennheiser HD-800s) that some of the stores have been getting in and stocking.  I asked an associate about "other" headphones other than the typical ones on their usual aisle.  He was one of those that walks around with a clipboard, in an attempt too look important.  He then had me wait a moment and headed for the Magnolia section.  Apparently, he went and asked them about higher end headphones and then came back to me.  He said that basically, the regular aisle is all they had and also mentioned that the Beats were some of the best headphones made.  I tried to not sound like a snob, but I had to tell him that I was looking for something that produced a bit more accurate sound than the Beats.  I then went about my way and spent a bit more time in the store.  Near the entry to the Magnolia section, there was a display with a few of the better headphones, including the model from B&W.  He clearly didn't know about these, nor did the Magnolia person he asked.

I do realize we all have these threads and discussions every few months on the various forums.  However, certainly, we can see what is clearly precipitating the demise of Best Buy in general.  As many of you know, they have closed some stores and I'm sure many are being reviewed for potential closure.  I guess we can't say too much other than the obvious - the Best Buy model really doesn't  work.  Most off the employees are just trying to earn a few bucks to pay the rent or put gas in their vehicles.  However, when it comes to being a true product specialist, they've never failed to disappoint me each time I've gone into their store.
