I'm having a problem. I have a Denon DCD-1560 that I want to use as a reciever/preamp/whatever to my headphones. So I play some Beethoven and plug the output from my E-MU 0404 into the back of the reciever, and hear nothing. So while I was pushing every button on the front I managed to push play and start the cd in the Denon playing. The strange thing is, I began to hear both the cd, and what was playing on my computer. I can think of a plausable solution to this besides putting in a cd of silence, or living with the cd playing. It should not be this way! Please help me out!

The Denon DCD-1560 is a CD player, no? I think we need some more info to be of help. What receiver/preamp do you have? Or are you saying you are trying to use the 1560 as a preamp?

Do you have an amp (headphone or speaker) that you are sending the signal on to?

I am not familiar with that particular Denon CDP - does it have analog in, and a ADC (analog to digital converter)? If not, it cannot handle an analog signal from a sound card. Does it have digital inputs (optical or coax)? If so, it's DAC may be usable to process those of your sound card has digital out. In either casem you'd need to then send the signal onto an amp.

When you play CD's, what do you use for am amp?

Tell us more ...

When I play a cd I go straight from the Denon to speakers. When I am trying to play something off of my computer, I go from the 0404's 1/4" out, to the analog on the Denon (fixed or variable). Then straight from the Denon to a set of speakers.
I can hear music off the computer fine when a cd is playing in the Denon, but I'm hearing the cd at the same time, which is annoying. When the cd is not playing, I get nothing.

hmmmm ... are you sure those connection on the 1560 are INPUTS? It sounds like they are OUTPUT connections for sending the CDP signals onto a preamp (fixed) or power amp (variable).

Again, excuse my ignorance of the Denon 1560, but does it have a headphone jack?

I'm not 100% positive about anything. The Denon does have a heaphones jack, which is what im using to go to the speakers. Is it possible for the Denon to be outputting music to my speakers through the headphone jack if the analog inputs I'm using are actually outputs? If so, then thats probably what's going on...

Yes it IS possible, and as you say, that is likely what is going on.

When you "press the button to play the CD", the signal path to the output is opened to allow the CD signal to go OUT to either pre or power amp. In your case, since you have an input signal present on those jacks from your soundcard, they mix, and are also preesent at your headphone jack. At least that's my theory. Get out your manual to confirm, but that sure seems like what's going on to me.

While that manual is out (the one for the CDP-1560) check to see if it can process analog input signals - I'll wager it can't.
