Outlaws bass deficient?

Have the outlaws ever been considered bass deficient? I am by no means a bass head, but at times it seems as if the bass is a tiny bit lacking. Extension is fine, but "punch" is absent sometimes. Now that I think of it, my system sounds better at night. Hmmm. Could power play a role in the equation as well?

I'm sorry, a cable cannot add bass that is not already part of the signal.

Andy, maybe your system sounds better at night because of the quiet environment, and your open HD580's.

IMO, power has a lot to do with how it sounds. Switching from my old pad to the new pad reaped obvious improvements. Testing further at the homes of various friends also confirmed my experiences.

Agreed. Ideally a cable should just let the signal through. In terms of bass, powercords have done the most for me in that department than ICs. If you try out some high end well regarded cables such as the Nordost Vahallas you might have the impression that they lack bass too. But in reality it's because you get so much more information and detail that you're not used to that gives you the impression that the bass is lackign.

Heh, but in theory at least, perhaps a cable could attenuate the other frequencies resulting in an apparent bass boost after make-up gain.

Anyhow, in my experience I certainly don't feel the Outlaw could be considered as bass deficient.

Maybe it is the power. Unfortunatly, all of my gear that runs on AC power has a captive power cord. Would changing the wall jack to a hospital grade one improve things, or is an upgraded power cord needed as well.

andrzejpw, usually voltage in residential areas drops in the evening, on weekends, and during hot weather. You mentioned your system sounds better at night?

Anyhow, you should give your power company a phone call. Normally they address requests for info regarding power swings as a matter of routine.

Just plug a test meter into the socket and see. Mine is generally a bit to the high side, which can causes electrical components to fail prematurely over time.

Interconnects are the last thing that you should blame for the lack of bass punch in your system. I think the HD580's are a far more likely cause of the problem.

As i recall, the bass was there, but a little on the bloated side, and not especially punchy

Hm, you have AD8620 opamps in your META42 right Andrzej? I love the AD8620 but they aren't known for punchy bass. If you need more bass, an opamp swap to something like an OPA627 might do the trick. But then again, if I remember correctly, your amp runs on batteries... That might have to change.

Its a bit odd actually. Some times I feel like the bass is "all there." I have no complaints. Other times, I feel its deficient. I'll have to remember to write down when I feel that it doesn't sound right and see if there is a pattern.

I've been doing a sort of mass comparison/review (I'll post my results...someday
rolleyes.gif
). Call it Cablepalooza.

The Outlaws to me are a bit on the warm side...which is nothing but good IMHO. Having said that, they tend to roll off both the high end (significantly) AND the low end (somewhat). Overall, I like them a lot in a system that tends to be a bit on the bright side, but there is something less-than-neutral about them.'

I don't THINK that this is what you are experiencing, as it seems that it changes from time to time. That being the case, it could be just about anything...power fluctuation, ambient noise, level of congestion in your ears/nose/throat at a given hour of the day (EWW!!), and so on.

Wait...you're from Pittsburgh?? Aren't most people doing their warsh at night?? Maybe that"s it??
