Other bands like the Pat Metheny Group?

that GRP stuff has the musical consistency of angel food cake. I've always thought that Pat Metheney's music had a lot more substance to it.

my opinion..

Check out Explosions in the Sky "Earth is Not A Cold Dead Place". They are labeled as "post-rock" but this album is very good and reminds me quite a lot of Pat Metheny Group's "Last Train Home".

Maybe it's just the instrumentation that saddles PMG with that label? I don't know.

Yea, that's kind of a head scratcher. Smooth Jazz has a big emphasis on simple programmed drum loops and almost a R & B slant. While some of PMG's slower passages might sound new-ageish, never "smooth jazz'ish". Big difference.

I gotta disgaree on the Rittenour "Smoke and Mirrors" cd mentioned above. I purchased it and it might be my biggest dissapointment of the year. The first track is okay and after that it is a big steamy pile of smooth jazz manure.

Allan Holdsworth, Mike Stern, Stanley Jordan, even while not so quiet sometimes but definitelly three more of the giants...

Y'know, I was circling back around and was going to say the same thing. If you kindof lump PMG in with smooth jazz, then take in a few listens of First Circle (the tune) or To The End of the World to change your mind. These are very complex tunes that just defy smooth jazz standards.

To The End of The World is one of my favourtite PMG tunes. Pat's synth solo on that track is just so beautiful it gives me shivers almost everytime I listen to it.

As for First Circle... yeah, you don't hear too many smooth jazz tunes in 11/8 time (or is it 1 bar of 5/8 and 1 bar of 6/8)!

Kind of like "5-5-7" from Letter From Home.

Cant really say i have found what i was looking for..

i find the Pat Metheny Group - The Way Up album much more leaning to the fusion/easylistening/newage/pop/cross-over type of style.

Don't really know is this is the right thing to say about their style whit the The Way Up album..

Try Al Dimeola's "Orange and Blue" release. I have many Dimeola cd's but this one is about as close as you can get (to PMG) from anything else I have heard. Very layered, texured, complex arrangements in the same vein as PMG.

Also, as I think someone mentioned earlier, check out the rest of the PMG library. Secret Story is fabulous, Speaking of Now, Letter From Home, We Live Here. Do you have those?
