Hi, just felt in love whit the Pat Metheny Group and the album The Way Up.

Just wonder what other artists i should take a listen to in the same type of style?

Its mostly jazzy and easy listening type of music.

Thanks!!

Welcome to smooth jazz. Pat Metheny throws in a bit of mellow fusion. Lee Ritenour has a smooth guitar style like Pat. David Benoit has a similar sound, though he's a pianist. There are so many others in this genre that are just great sounding. Eric Marienthal is similar, though he plays the sax instead of the guitar.

Another really great guitar sound, but in acoustic which sounds just fabulous with the RS-1's is the band Acoustic Alchemy. Just wonderful harmony in the dueling guitar players in this band.

A compilation like Very-Best-Smooth-Jazz-Guitar
would be a good start to the guitar side of this genre. But, the selections on this album wouldn't have been my first choice for the artists represented.

For me, there is nothing else around quite like PMG. I'm glad you like it. Instead of looking for other groups, though, you would do yourself good to mine the Pat Metheny catalog. If you like The Way Up, check out some recent titles like Speaking of Now or Imaginary Day. Once you digest that, go back a few years to my favorites: Still Life (Talking), Letter From Home, and the amazing solo of Secret Story.

Enjoy!

Exactly. Get "Speaking of Now" next. "Imaginary Day", "Secret Story"....There is plenty in the library to be checking out. With all due respect to the Geardoc, none of those bands sound anything like The Pat Metheny Group. They are a total orginal. For the record, I'll plug the latest release from Spyro Gyra "Good to Go Go". While not much like PMG it's still a terrific contemporary jazz cd. Great musicians, great chops and you'll never hear any of it on the radio as it's a little too bold.

so many good smooth jazz cds... Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, David Benoit, Acoustic Alchemy, Spyro Gyra, Fourplay, Bob James, Larry Carlton, Rick Braun, etc... Some pat metheny goes toward the more standard jazz though combined with smooth jazz. For that, try Joshua Redman, Michael Brecker, or the funkier sounds of herbie han****, weather report, marcus miller, etc...

edit: hehehe I didn't know han**** is censored hehehe

...as I perused my library more probably the closest sounding thing I have to PBG music is Al Dimeola's "Orange and Blue" and also "Consequences of Chaos." Multi-layered, texured and pretty complex arangements.
The PMG library should keep you quite busy and then you can branch off into other projects Pat and the rest of the band has been involved in.
Also, check out live version of "First Circle" from PMG's 1993 The Road To You release. Incredible.

Nice to see that you enjoy Pat Metheny Group, which I introduced you to yesterday. I am still checking out their albums myself.

Jazz is a totally new territory for me... :Lambda:

Ditto to all the above comments with the possible exception being the group Weather Report which never hit the right chord for me (except their song Birdland).

And when did Herbie Han**** become so smooth? He he, had to see if the censor worked again..

PMG also allows recordings of their live performance to be circulated among fans. Check out this for lossless. Their support group's compilation "PMG Companion Vol I and II" are not to be missed.

I have more than 10 versions of one particular song, the oldest performed on the day it was 11 days old, back in 1979

I think Robin Trower has some Pat Metheny-ish elements to his music at times. PMG is smoother and Trower is more toward the rock side but they have some common elements that complement one another, IMO.

I can also recommend Lee Ritenour's Smoke 'n' Mirrors CD. Motherland is the song I use to show off the bass in headphones to disbelievers.

I have a hard time thinking of Pat Metheny as "Smooth Jazz". I mean, compositionally, he and Mays are so far advanced from anything I've heard that would be considered smooth jazz.

Maybe it's just the instrumentation that saddles PMG with that label? I don't know.

Anyway, I too would recommend further mining of the PMG catalogue. The already recommended recent recordings are great, but the earliest PMG records are not to be missed either. Offramp and Pat Metheny Group are two personal faves from earlier days.

Y'know, I was circling back around and was going to say the same thing. If you kindof lump PMG in with smooth jazz, then take in a few listens of First Circle (the tune) or To The End of the World to change your mind. These are very complex tunes that just defy smooth jazz standards.

Now, not to dis Larry Carlton or Lee Ritenour. They are both great players!

Me too. I had no idea they would allow that. That's very cool.
