It showed up a bit earlier today along with my KnuKonceptz eKs-R1 ICs. The x-fi adapter isn't here yet so I had to test it with a cheap sony DVD player as a transport. I hardly own any CDs but thankfully I have two of my favorites, Metallica's S&M and Tool's 10,000 Days. Keep in mind that I've only had the K701s for a week and that I completely suck at using audiophile terms still.

So anyway I pop Tool in and right away it sounds the same. I was a bit confused but as soon as the vocals kicked in I was in heaven

I particularly like the beginning of Vicarious because I can easily tell right away how simbilant and forward vocals are on my setup. The sssssss sounds didn't seem to drag at all and the vocals were much more separated than on the x-fi. I was finally hearing the "Airy" soundstage of the K701s that I have read so much about.

Next up was S&M. Now I never listen to classical music and I probably couldn't tell a trombone from a tuba but the brass instruments were incredibly realistic with this DAC. It sounded like they were actually playing in front of me. Listening to some of the tracks again on my x-fi was mightily disappointing in that aspect. Instrument separation was also great and I can easily pick out exactly where I was hearing everything. While on the topic of it creaming the x-fi, it's very transparent and really transports me into my own little world with the music. I can't get enough!

At 40 dollars i was pretty surprised to see these ICs came in a box and all.

I'm not sure how good these cables really are as I have nothing to compare them to but the build quality is top notch. Thick, sleeved, and heatshrinked locking RCA connectors.

Looks like any other Zhaolu D2.5 other than this sticker and the missing headphone jack/volume knob

My overall setup minus the DVD player. Sorry for the dark pictures my lighting is poor.

Yeah it's a monster cable coax, only one I own. Ordered a toslink not knowing Ori disabled it.

Thank you Ori for the great mods, he was a pleasure to deal with. I likely won't be upgrading my source for years to come, that's how good it is! (well that and the fact that I'd need to spend at least a grand to beat this

Good move on the DAC! Now keep an eye for a real coax digital cable and a used Black Sands Violet Z1 power cord for your Ori Zhaolu!

great to see another happy OMZ owner! I too didn't realise how sibilant, "digital" and harsh my Zhaolu sounded prior to Ori's mod.

All this without losing the punchy and slammy nature of the Zhaolu. For some reason I had been under the impression that brighter sounding sources needed to be sibilant or a little harsher on the top end but Ori's Zhaolu has taken me to a whole new level of listening

nice, I am actually thinking about either getting that, Musiland, or DA100... is tough decision since I don't know what I will be missing

Just small thought, surprisingly , Headfive is actually a very unforgivable amp compare to the HP100. It actually amplify any noise that is coming from the source. Well, I guess that is good thing sometimes

It is more to come. Watch your Ori Zhaolu being broken-in. Decent cables and AC cord will take you to another level beyond your new "baseline".

Happy listening.

Yeah power cord was next on my list. The black sands one is pretty pricey

It just seems stupid having your ICs and power cords equal your source in cost. I'll look into it as my wallet recovers.

Not any more!

All new orders include a custom faceplate. Check out the cool pics on the OMZ page.
Since many owners seem to read this thread, I'd like to mention that older OMZ D2.5 can retrofit the new faceplate (email me for details). I'm checking on the fit to a D2 as well.

Well, afreinside. Pricing can be arbitrarily in one sense while cable effects really do exist.

How much would you pay for a trendy Versace necktie for your Armani suit ?

i think someone in this board mentions that all these hype about cables are overblown. dont get me wrong, cables are important in some sense, but if you gonna spend the same amount as the source on cables, why dont you just buy an even better source?

btw, i wouldn't want to buy a tie that equals my suit. why dont i just buy another nice suit? tie is all about matching. if you match it right, it doesnt matter what the label is. no one cares if it's versace or not and you yourself wouldnt feel a difference. so that's a bad analogy, to me.

Totally agreed if our concern is only the money side. Don't forget to take the cable effects into account. Audition ones and trust your ears. This is my take.

It would be very hard to find such a better unit, perhaps over $20k.

Wow, I didn't know about the custom faceplate. =T I was decided to take this off of my list when I was deciding on a DAC simply because I didn't like the look of the headphone out/volume knob, especially since it was disabled.

After a painful 26 hours the x-fi adapter finally arrived! It looks pretty cheap, will it negate any gains from a better coax cable?

Ori stopped by today and dropped off my OMZ with the new factplate.

Compared with Lavry DA10 with Dynahi (also got today!). OMZ is much better:
(1) sound stage -- wider horizontally, clear 3 dimensional effect, which impressed me the most at the San Jose Meet.
(2) instrument separation is unreal! I not only can hear each instrauments playing separately but also can place them separately.
(3) resolution is superb. The details is very clear.

ok, I am in head-fi heaven now
