Check the search function - that topic seems to come up every couple of weeks.

I modded one recently. Check www.dogbreath.de for details. Not my site, just where I stole, I mean 'acquired' the ideas. I remote-mounted the power supply to a Hammond cast aluminum case. It has and IEC input, and I'm using a decent DIY power cable with it. I also bypassed the output stage by wiring directly from the DAC, through a pair of 3.3uF, ClarityCap SA (their best) caps from DIY Cable. These things are huge, so I had to mount them in the space where the PS was mounted.
Sound quality overall is excellent. I really can't compare the sound to any high-end players simply because I've never heard any, but I will say that this thing sounds a heck of a lot better than one might expect, given its humble beginings. Plus, it's a modder's dream, 'cuz it's very cheap to start with (I paid 20 bucks for mine) and the mod's don't cost much either. The web site I referenced is extremely helpful with lots of info and pix. Check it out if you enjoy DIY.
