Oppo PM-1 Planar Magnetic Headphone Impressions Thread

Maybe I'm missing something, was the PM3 discontinued long before Oppo announced they were stopping all of their audio line? I had assumed that they stopped selling the PM3 first as they would run out of stock first as it was clearly the more popular (affordable quality so no surprise) so there would be stock of the PM1 and 2 for longer. Now I'm taking an educated guess here, but I suspect that Oppo knew long before the official announcement that they were ceasing production of the audio line so the PM3 went out of stock first would be my guess. Again, I could be completely wrong. Just ask my girlfriend, she'll tell you that I frequently am wrong.

Oppo was still offering the PM-3 (black only) when they made the announcement, though they had not any PM-1s or PM-2s for some time before that.

Ok, I could see that, and despite being wrong with my initial theory, it still works. So the PM3 would have lasted in stock as the more popular model, the manufacturing runs would have been much larger so that would make sense that the PM1 and 2, certainly made in much smaller numbers would have run out first. Makes sense, thanks for pointing this out to me.

Does pm2 scale with high end gear? PM1 is said to do well here.

I wondered the same thing, I couldn’t find any for sale used. I contacted Oppo and they said they don’t sell them anymore. A few weeks later I asked them again. This time, someone took the time to go physically look and low and behold they found a few on a shelf and I bought one. That was about 5 months ago, but ou can try. I’ve seen them on sale on Amazon UK , but vendor said he’s not allowed to sell to Oppo prodipucts to U.S. Last option would be to watch for Ebayers selling their Oppo PM -1 but willing to sell the original leather pads separately. I prefer the sound from these original leather pads. Good luck in your search.

We should get together as pm1 owners and continue exchanging thoughts here. It will be a collectors item and can easily match 2019 cans in performance.

Yes the PM1 is a truly wonderful sounding headphone. I had a mint set on hand for a few weeks as I was selling them on behalf of a friend. I can tell you that if at that time I could have afforded them I would have absolutely purchased them. Such a nice build and design I thought and very much complimented the sound signature. Just a great headphone all round. Wish I owned the PM1.

I have an extra pair of synthetic leather pads from oppo and will be buying a back up stock cable from them too to future proof the headphone. Lambskin pads remain my favourite.

How does the pm1 compare to 2019 flagships?

The PM-1's were my first truly high end head-phone which I picked up used. I loved the sound signature, but due to my inexperience and desire to try other gear I ended up trading them away after about 6-months. That is one set of headphones that I would love to get back. Had they not retired their headphone line I am sure I would have bought another set. The build, comfort, pads and sound signature are very much what i enjoy (now that I know what I enjoy).

One of the best presentation cases I have seen also!

I almost put them up for sale. Then i went back in time and started reading 2014/15 reviews and started to study the headphone. I read Darko's low down on the designers stance. After doing all of this i then started to realise what a gem i have. The build is arguably thee best. I couldn't find extra lambskin pads so i contacted oppo and the rest is history and i now have extra synthetic leather pads.. I hope my pm1 will be going good 10 years from now with 3 sets of pads and 2 cables. I don't like the velour pads and they are brand new if anyone would like to swap their original lambskin pads for them? The benefits of good amping not just power needs to be appreciated. These will be collectors items soon.

Absolutely, the PM1 I agree is worthy of collector status, as is the PM2 if perhaps a little less so. Such a shame that Oppo got out of the game. I actually believe that they really helped drive forward the confidence for new brands to enter into untested space and produce unique headphones. Consider what Oppo pulled off here with the PM1/2/3, very, very impressive. Big loss for the headphone community that no new Oppo designs will ever be forthcoming.

I'm running my pm1 from a chord mscaler/hugo2. Soon i'll be upgrading to TT2. The pm1 scales very nicely from laptop to mojo to hugo2 to mscaler added. Anyone who is not sure about the scalability of the pm1 needs to have another listen to understand that the pm1 scales up with high end gear very nicely indeed.
