Some time ago I tested the HA-1 against a Violectric HPA V222. I also wanted to sell the HA-1, but had to send back the Violectric instead. The soundstage was much smaller on the V222. I talked to the boss of Violectric here in Germany, and he told me that their V222 is not completely balanced from input to output. You can hear it very well in combination with a true balanced and symmetrically laid-out DAC like the old NAD M51 / C510.
I only use it as an analog amplifier, as I don't like the built in DAC.

I'm just got a tube amp, I think I will let the HA-1 go this time, so hard to do but time to upgrade :)
I'd consider keeping it as a preamp, you'd be surprised how difficult it is to find something with all of its features. It has track controls over USB and Bluetooth with its remote. It has a fully functional remote via the Bluetooth app. Fixed and variable output selection, I/0 triggers. And a beautiful display.
