Opinions on Sony MDR-EX81s

What do you guys think about them? Especially comparing them with EX-51s/71s?

I think they are much better.
They have improved in almost every ways that headphones can.

better mids, more controlled bass than the ex51/81. the earhook design also eliminates microphonics.

From my experience, the EX81s are in every way an upgrade besides bass, and maybe ease of use. You lose the 'signature trademark' bass of the EX51/71s (which was my only quirk with the 81s), so no more booming sub-in-your-ear bass, but rather more tighter and refined bass.. it does 'loosen' up abit after burn in.. As for "ease of use," I found the EX81s alot harder to stick in your ear due to the hooks, but an easy solution would be instead of taking them completely off, just pull the bud from your ears and leave the phone hanging from the hook off the top of your ears when someone started talking to you or something.

All in all, IMO.. (I upgraded from the 71s to the 81s), the clearer mids and highs weren't worth the loss of bass (for my type of music), but I'm more of a 'basshead' so it can vary I guess... plus alot of people on this board seem to favour the 81s over the 51/71s.

Yeah too bad the sound comes out distorted with your custom EQ on your iRiver.
I can EQ it to boom (for HipHop/Rap and R&B), then change it back for other kinds.

I don't mind mine. The sound is better (less boomy bass) then the EX-71's, but no where near as clean and detailed as my old ER-6i's. My main gripe with them is that they fall out of my ears. I have what I consider to be medium size ears. I find that they are always falling out or coming out when I'm at the gym, running, snowboarding, and so on.
