i am looking for a good sounding first rig.

i am looking right now at the Sennheiser 280 pro, and the K240 Studio
Please help me decide from those and other good headphones for a first pair.

Also suggestions on cheap amps

K240s beats the HD280 (IMHO) as a fun to listen to can. Its far from flat / accurate though... nicely bloated bass and foreward mids, gently rolled off treble.

the HD280 is pretty flat across the spectrum, maybe a little trebble boost but thats about it. Impressive sub bass extension too.

many times guitar center or sam ash have demos laying around or hooked up to mixers, in the pro-audio room.

HD555's..about 120...easy to drive but will show some improvment if you do pick up a amp and a good all round proformer.

I just looked at the price on toddthevinyljunkie and it said those were $149 and i don't want to pay that price yet. You can get Grado SR125's for that and they are awesome

most phones (not ms-1s, but most others) you can buy from headroom (headphone.com). they have a price-matching service, so you can use froogle to find a much lower price for phones than on headroom, pricematch it down, and take advantage of headroom great customer service and 30 day guarantee.

doing this, you can get the hd555s for about $100
