I have tried dissembling Senn headphones out of curiosity and I wanted to know what were inside. Replacing drivers was not absolutely impossible, but seemed to me difficult. You need to cut the lines, pull out the old driver, cram a new one in, and weld the line back on.

y'know, if you could get your hand on a HD565, that might help as well. won't need an amp for that. and they sound pretty close to the HD580 and 600 (not the same, but close enough).

just making it more complicated for ya

I believe the general opinion is yes, but it will also depend on taste ofcourse. Jan Meier thinks the 590 are pretty good, as do some others. the 565's discontinued for a while now tho, but they're still available in some stores. if you run into them, give em a try, else just get your 590's repaired. If you're having problems, Senn will replace the driver for ya.

I'm using the HD600s right now with my Arcam Delta 290 Integrated amp(this amp is basically the same as the New Alpha 10 but with a little less power). The headphones sound very very good so far...Arcam didn't skimp.

I have heard the 590s only briefly and they have a much brighter sound...they were good but I actually preferred the 580s(which are cheaper) much more.

The difference between the 580s and 600s are subtle and the 580 is probably a better value than anything that Sennheiser makes. That said, the 600s are still a better headphone. In a way it's like the diminishing returns idea. The 600s may give you a 10% improvement over the 580s but that 10% will cost you 30% more money. The RS 1 will give you a 2% improvement over the 600s(although I'm not sure about that yet) and cost 100% more money.

A stereo amplifier's headphone socket will drive the 600s fine. You may want to look into a separate amp down the road...but the phones make the biggest difference - not the amp(unless you have a terrible amp of course.

Yeah, but the 600s are pretty demanding when it comes to source quality.

The 590 however are designed to be driven easily, so I guess they will be more forgiving as well.

Since the 59 are being replaced anyway, I think it's ok to give them a try first instead of upgrading to the 600s right away.

True.

I have a Cambridge Audio CD6 which is a fairly good cd player and have not encountered any shrillness or other nasties. When I have time I'm going to listen to my Pioneer DV333 player to see how bad it actually is... the 333 was dull and uninviting through my stereo so they likely will be even worse through headphones.

A headphone should detect some weaknesses otherwise they are not that revealing

My refurbed Senn 590 came in a plastic bag with a simple printed label.

Still, no real complaints. I still got the two-year warranty and all that. If I look VERY close I can see a tiny nick or indentation on one of the inner foam (cloth?) driver-cover pads, but in every other respect it's a brand-new phone. I'll bet someone returned it because of that tiny cosmetic imperfection, Sennheiser examined the phone, went "meh" and shrugged, and simply put it back into circulation. As long as I get it for half the retail price, I'm happy.
