It's like having two little speakers strapped to the side of your head - the sound comes out each side equally. They're usually not suitable for work unless you have your own office, and they're not suitable for noisy environments. The only place i'd use them would be a quiet room at home, if I could find a quiet room.
it would really not be polite to wear an open phone anywhere that you will be in close vicinity to anyone else. also, open phones do not block out any outside sound, so they would not really work well in public.

The sound leakages are also depend heavily on headphones. Some leaks more than others... having said that, they do have their advantage where you can hear your surroundings at normal to soft volume. IMHO, open phones must for baby sitting... Of course excessively loud volume can wake up the sensitive ones
