Hi guys, ive been looking for a pair of open headphones primarily for hip hop(dont worry, not the crap that is played on the radio). ive been looking at the hifiman he 400 and 500 and also the hd 650. I know that these head phones were not made for hip hop however they both seem lile very nice cans. If anyone has any advice on other head phones (open or closed) in this price range 500 to 800 that would greatly be appreciated.
thanks

Wow, well for MUCH less [around $180] there is the Byerdyanmic Dt 990 Pro, I find it has plenty of excellent bass for Hip Hop and Rap, I enjoy these artists my self

Now since your asking about open cans I assume you will be listening at home, since open cans provide no isolation and are not a good idea for a portable headphone

I'd take the extra $500 dollars you have left, and invest in a Good Dac and Tube. Something like the JDS Labs oDac and a Little Dot MK IV even, there are PLENTY of options but in my opinion. Seeing as this is your second post, you'd have a great start into audiophilia with an overal balanced set up, as opposed to an uber expenive can, and a sub par amp and dac

Maybe not your defination of Hip Hop, but some of my favorite Artists that I consider to be Hip Hop, and as I type this I'm enjoying these tubes on my very own Byerdyanmic Dt 990 Pro 250 ohm. Some things I enjoy are the timbre of horns, the kick of the drums. The extension and air of the treble, And the clarity and punch of vocals! As always though please enjoy your music in 16 bit lossless, because you tube murders music <3 [trust me 16 bit Flacs sound much better than their youtube counterparts xD]

The DT990s DO seem like a great deal, especially if you don't already have a good DAC/amp to use with higher end phones.

If you do already have a good DAC/amp, then I would also suggest looking into the Ultrasone Pro 2900.

Yeap.

Looking at your $800 budget, the Pro 250 ohm would cost around $200 [maybe less] leaving you $600 for an amp and dac, and oDac [around $170{ leaves you with $430 for an amp. WIth that you could afford something like a LIttle Dot MK IV SE [with shipping around $439 or so]

I'd really HIGHLY recommend the oDac, and as far as amps go your have your choice from about a dozen or more in the $400 or so range!
