Open headphone similar to AKG K271 Studio

Hmm... you changed this thread to a discussion thread from advertising...

Anyway, to the point, I think some people recommend the HD650 to sound similar to the K271. I personally didn't, though. I thought the K271 was much lighter and somehow thinner sounding.

I actually listened to a pair of K271s today at a local store. I´ve never listened to them before and today was a very short audition with music and equipment I wasn´t familiar with. I still feel quite confident telling you that they were somewhat similar to my K701s regarding the tonal balance. The biggest difference between the two seemed to be that K701 has larger soundstage and better resolution.

*cough*advertising?*cough*

I'll try both the K701 and K240 (studio or monitors?).

The K271 is a very strange headphone to say the least. It's very warm but has lean bass and the highs aren't harsh at all. The effect is fantastic for some genres but too hollow for others. hopefully the midrange on the K701 will be better.

Thanks

Recabled HD650 is very K271S alike with bigger soundstage and meatier bass.
K271S has quite pronounced midrange, not sure how you perceive it lacking. Do you run them amped, what are your reference phones?

I'm not sure if midrange is the right term, "lower treble" maybe? Some songs just sound "wrong", often it's voices and bright instruments. My other headphones would all be considered bright (Beyer DT660, DT860, Grado SR325i, Ety ER4P/ER4S), but I never A/B them with the AKGs or listen to them in quick succession. I've been listening to K271s almost exclusively over the last month to see if I should keep them, but other than the deep bass (I can feel it in my chest), they're just average. I'll try some higher end closed h'phones in the future when I have some cash. Right now though, I'm looking for a more mellow open h'phone to compliment my SR325i.

At home I'm using them straight out of a Beresford MK6. Nothing really changes out of a Hornet "M" or straight out of my portables (Sony HD5 and various PCD players).

Thanks
EK
