dt 880 doesn't really sound like dt 770 IMO and IME. Perhaps someone can comment on the dt 990 though?

(I think! someone correct me if I'm wrong)

I thought I read somewhere that the 770's and 990's have the same drivers... and the 880's were the ones with different drivers?

I was shopping around for BD's not long ago and got the DT770/80 Pro (sort of on accident, but that's another story).

Norbert from Beyerdynamic wrote me:

As a producer of rock and pop music we recommend the very linear frequency response of a DT880 as THE reference headphones.

For purposes of recording jazz and classic genres - they have the most dynamic amplitude in aspects of music - we recommend to use the topmodel DT990. This model has also a lightly extended bass response than the DT880 due to passive acoustic elements inside the chassis.

So as you can see it is a question of for WHAT you want to use the headphones.

x2, except of course that the DT990 are better. Even the old series DT990 should hold up pretty well against a 770. You won't get the exaggerated bass, but the bass you do get will be more precise. AKG and AT on the other hand sound different and are not comfortable in the same way. The problem with the DT990 (any series) is that you're going to want to move up from your LDM+.
