Does anyone have any experience of this op amp? I'm about to upgrade an X-Can version 1 for a fellow Head-Fier which will involve replacing all the caps with ELNA's, Rubycons and Panasonic FC's as well as the Op amps.

My X-Can V2 does not employ operation amplifiers in the circuit so it would be good to hear from anybody that has used the 2134's.
I'll be fitting Gold plated dual in-line 8 pin IC sockets which will make it easier to swap op amps over should the need arise.

I cant believe Musical fidelity soldered the op amps directly on to the board to save money on fitting an IC socket! The lengths these manufacturers will go to to save a few pennies is quite sad isn't it?

There has been a lot of talk about upgrading the original X-Can on these forums and at Headwize but, as far as I'm aware, this will be the first X-can to undergo these upgrades. I will obviously upload my findings to http://freespace.virgin.net/rock.grotto/index2.htm as soon as the upgrade is complete along with a parts list, instructions and diagrams for anybody else wishing to undertake this upgrade.

People have contacted me asking where I sourced my ELNA cerafines for the V2 upgrade. These were a one off favour from a friend at ELNA so I'm not sure if they are universally available.

The X-Can Version one will be upgraded with parts that are generally available though so anybody wishing to try the upgrade shouldn't have any difficulty sourcing the parts.

The X-Can v2 employs op amps as output devices, I believe. If you look at the main circuit board, you should see two Philips dual op-amps, one just behind the face plate, and another under the power supply board. There is a film capacitor located next to each. They are soldered to the board.

Have you modified your unit to bypass them?

Hi Hirsch,

There are no Op amps on my X-Can V2. It's the very latest version and doesn't employ Op amps. If you go to http://freespace.virgin.net/rock.gro...pscomplete.htm you'll see a picture of the lower board.

The V2 version I have is the one they designed for the Nu-Vistor valve (the guy at MF reckoned it would have cost around the £500 mark if it had made it into production) Maybe this is one of the reasons this baby responds ever so well to cap and valve upgrades.

I can take an even more detailed picture of the lower board if you need it?

Interesting. Could there be more than one version of the v2? Mine definitely had op amps. I put in sockets, and tried the Burr Brown OPA2228PA with good results.

I wonder why one with transistors wasn't called the v3?

I'd appreciate a detailed picture of the area between the front tube and the faceplate. If it's got an op amp, that's where one is.
