I got my partner a pair of ATH-M50s for his birthday yesterday, and he loves them for music, but when he tries them with the 360, he only gets sound out of the speaker. Any suggestions?

He's using the little RCA female/3.5mm male adapter that comes with the VGA cable for the 360, and a 3.5mm female/3.5mm female adapter to connect the headphones to it.

My bets would be on purely mechanical connection problems. Everything plugged in 100% correctly? Some jacks can be a little tight.

Oh, and doesn't the Xbox 360 only have a line out (unless the grey cell storage is failing me)? That might not be so well-suited for cans to begin with.

If you're talking about the "Xbox 360" you will need a RCA Pair of females to a female 3.5mm cable like this:

You may also need a amplifier or volume controller of some sort since the volume coming from the Xbox 360 is at a fixed rate. An amplifier will boost the volume and control it while the volume controller will just be able to lower it below the fix rate from the Xbox 360.

A cheap amplifer you can buy for about $20 is a FiiO E5:

You can purchse the FiiO E5 from here: Purchase FiiO E5

I remember trying to use my 360 as a source to my headphone amp just for fun and it didn't work properly either. I don't remember why or what I did though(long time ago).

Turns out that if I plug it in half way I get sound to both speakers, but I can't determine if the direction audio is working with proper simulated surround sound like it should be. I'll toy around with it later.

Yeah, I don't think it's the 360 or the Headphones fault. I think it might just be the connector between them, seeing as the 360 sends the signal just fine, and the headphones receive a signal from my computer just fine.

It has to be the connector. If the headphones play fine from another source, it's not the headphones. If the 360 sends stereo into another receiving device (TV, stereo system, etc.), it's not the 360.

For some reason the connector's buggy. Are you sure it's a stereo > stereo adapter?

So it could be a Stereo>Mono or Mono>Mono coupler?
I didn't think of that. I'll have to swing by RadioShack or find the packaging somewhere. Thanks.

Yeah, that's what it sounds like. It's probably doing some bridging in there somewhere.

You want (dual mono female RCA) > (stereo female 1/8"), and then he should be good to go.

Alternatively, if they don't have it, you may have to just get a regular RCA>1/8" male adapter, and get 2 female-female RCA couplers and 1 female-female 1/8" coupler. Although, by the time you spend all of the money on that, you could have bought him a cheap headphone amp.

Well I tried it with another pair of headphones, same thing. I tried it from an portable media player instead of my computer, same thing. so it's definitely not the computer or headphones. I brought the coupler back to Radio Shack, confirmed that it was Stereo>Stereo, and told them it was broken. The replaced it and I have the same problem -_-

could Radio Shack be advertising a Stereo>Mono coupler as Stereo>Stereo? Because that's what it seems like right now.

Problem Solved
Turns out he first coupler they gave me wouldn't accept the plugs in deep enough, so when I got the 2nd one I wasn't plugging them in all the way and expecting it to work. I can push the plugs into the 2nd one further, where it works. Yay
