I did a search for this player on these forums and it seems fairly popular (and I made sure my question hasn't been asked already). My question for other owners: is it normal for it to get hot, especially on the bottom? It gets hot when it is "on" even when not playing. It is sitting on top of a DX-9555 amp but most of the heat doesn't come from the amp because it gets only slightly warm if the amp is on but player "off" or on "standby." It also doesn't get hot if I use the Onkyo minidisc player sitting on top of it, also hooked to the same amp (that is, it doesn't get hot if it is off or on standby, gets hot if on even if not playing, regardless of whether or not the minidisc player is on).

Maybe all components get warm but this is my very first setup and so I don't know what is normal. I am very pleased with it otherwise. I did contact Onkyo and they were nice and said to service it, but I'm suspicious that's the automatic response when someone complains of heat, so they don't get sued if my house burns down (it doesn't get quite that hot....). Thanks for any info.

Hmmm....I have never heard of a CD player getting "hot". Since the Onkyo amp you have is a digital amp, I don't expect it to get anywhere near warm.

Maybe you should bring it in while it's still covered under the warranty.

Thank you Soundboy for replying to my very boring question. This is my very first non-portable player (I put off getting one 'till I could get a really nice one), so I just didn't know. It takes a while to get hot (at least 30 min, but probably more like 60 min, depending on how cold it is when first turned on) so I can use it without harm for a while, but I will definitely send it in for service. It will be under warranty for a couple of years (I bought it brand new). I just really worry about shipping things, so I was hoping it was all normal.

The amp, on the other hand, I'm pretty sure it is normal for it to get somewhat warm, according to other posts, though few people discuss heat, even if I google the internet, not just search this site. It may not get very hot like other types of amps though.

Digital amps tend to run cooler than conventional amps.

Do you have a local Onkyo-authorized service shop?

No, I would have to send it to a neighboring state. That's why I was hesitant.

I listen to music mostly as a break from writing, and rarely for more than 1 hour, so it doesn't have time to get too hot, and so it is probably not too urgent to fix it. It is really only a problem when I forget to turn it off after a CD is done playing. If I wanted to have it on for many hours at a time I'd be much more concerned about a speedy fix, because I know heat can damage things.

Pagana, did you mean that you have the A-9555 amp? I don't think there is a DX-9555. I have both the DX-7555 and A-9555. When you say the CDP gets hot, exactly how hot? Overall my unit doesn't get hot, but the underside gets somewhat warm in the rear left corner which hasn't raised any concerns for me.

Zotjen,

You are right, I meant A-9555. My CD player also gets warm on the bottom left back corner, just before the "foot." If I unplug the RI connection to the amp, it only gets a little bit warm. In other words, if I turn the CD player on without the amp also being turned on via the RI connection, it doesn't get hot, just slightly warm. (Hot = not burning but not just warm.) But I know the amp doesn't get the CDP hot if it is driving something else, like the minidisc player. Still, the heat seems to be coming from the amp, so I put blocks under the feet of the CDP to lift it up higher. Eventually I'll get a proper cabinet with separate shelves for each component. I didn't expect heat to be a problem since they are not enclosed in a cabinet now.

They are very nice units, and I didn't mean to give them bad publicity here. The warranty is also very generous.

Thanks!
