Lately, life has been a bit busy, to say the least. That, combined with the major frustration I/we encountered in the last round of headphone FAQ attempts, has led me to give up on working on an FAQ. Until now.
I want to give one last shot at putting *something* together. It doesnt have to be the BE ALL END ALL FAQ, but this site does need something in the meantime, until all you geniuses create the "uber thread of useful, yet concise and ever relevant Headphone info for people looking to buy a pair of cans."
I won't speak for Duncan or anyone else, but I put quite a bit of time researching and working on my dinky little FAQ thread. Even if I didn't agree with all comments, I certainly considered what everyone had to say. But it gets really old when people fail to provide any constructive info, and instead just spout out their favorite items. and then attempt to justify it.
If i were a newbie, coming here for the first time again, I personally would want to see a list of the common cans to buy. I would want a list to start with, and taking the names and info from that list, I could research about particular pairs of cans that seem to meet my budget and needs. Along with that list, a glossary of terms might be nice. "what the hell is impedance?" "what is meant by open vs closed?" "what phones could I take with me and use in a cafe?" Those are all questions I first asked myself when I got here. I know for a fact I asked for $150-200 headphones. at least once. I know that a lot of factors can determine which headphones might meet one's circumstances. Sometimes a $100 would do the job, instead of having to shell out $300. And sometimes there's just no way to get what one wants out of a $200 pair of cans, no matter how hard you try to like them. But to me, something like a list of all the generally and commonly recommended phones would give me a place to start. I could see everything from the < $50 phones all the way up to the Omega IIs.... One list, that anyone and everyone could reference, could be the springboard that takes people from being utterly lost, without a single lead of what phones to look into, to having at least a few names to examine.
Its 5:48am, so I dont know if that made sense. I just want to help out, to give newbies that tiny push in the right direction, and let them research research research to find what works for them.
it would have helped me, so I just imagine it would help others.
Pretty soon though, I will be too busy and too poor to really be able to follow headphones any longer. So if I am ever able to help out, now is the time. There are better, smarter, far more capable people on this board who could create a far superior FAQ to what I have proposed, but at least this would be something, which could be trashed later, but used in the meantime.
blah, must sleep.
thanks for reading a rant that I've given before....and hopefully won't have to give again
