I have an old Sony D-465 w/combined line-out and optical-out that I would like to put back into use as a transport, but I don't grok how the optical connection works (toslink output from the D-555 is very apparent). Is there some type of shutter system that retracts when the mini-toslink connector is attached?

The spindle on this is broken and it doesn't play outer tracks very well, too much wobble, hence my not using it. But given the motivation, repair is possible, I do have the tiny bit that broke off and could use some plastic weld epoxy.

It doesn't really need a shutter - it just needs an LED for the toslink, and contacts for the line out. What's broken there?

Make sure to check out the DIY Discman Repair Thread in the Portables forum. Lots of stories and links there.

'Grok.' Nice.

You don't see the output because there is a switch of sorts built into the mini-TOSlink connector that disables the LED unless there is a nonmetallic plug (as in mini-TOSlink cable) inserted. This saves on batteries.
