OMG what have I done

I recently bought 650s and I wasn't crazy about them at first. They have really grown on me, but I still find the bass a bit artificially bloated. I have never heard 600s but I wonder if I wouldn't have been happier with them.

On the other hand, I'm also curious about DT-880s, K-701s, SR-225s and RS-2s.

Need to try to find some place where I can try listening to a bunch of these...

What is your source? That is an odd one. I am usually sensitive to harsh frequencies and that was why I went to the 650s. Of course this was after I had tried some Grados so I guess everything is relative.

My source is as follows:

Marantz CD 5001 OSE CD Player

Musical Fidelity X-Can v3 Headphone Amp

Black Rhodium RCA Cables

And of course the dreaded Sennheiser HD650

That bit of kit should surely make the Sennheiser HD650 sing.

You should try the HD-650 on an SS amp (I believe the X-Can is a tube design?). Also, give the cans (and your ears/brain) to burn-in for 200 hours at least. They really take that long to burn in, just like the AKG K601/701.

I have both 600s and 650s, and based on my experience, the 650s are more amp dependent than the 600s, though others may disagree. I've heard the 650s with both the X-Can 2 (modded) and X-Can 3, and didn't like them with either. Though I didn't have the 600s at the time, I would have been turned off by the 650s if that had been my only experience. I love my 650s with my main home amp, but prefer the 600s with my others. Both are wonderful headphones, but if you like the 600s better, stick with them.

EDIT: though both my 650s ad 600s were bought used, so I can't fairly comment on burn-in, based on my experience with many other headphones, I remain highly skeptical of any claims that burn in would make a difference big enough to change your experience in a favorable way.

EDIT 2: if you do decide to stick with the 650s, seriously consider an aftermarket cable.

I don't think he's lying. I think he's being brutally honest.

Anadin: Several people have asked why you just can't go back to the store and get your 600s back. Why didn't you just listen to both in the store?

Yeah, they can be torture. In fact, if you find a sound that you like, small differences that move away from the "sweet spot" can result in disproportionate disappointment.

I'm with him, incidentally. I enjoy the sound of the HD-600, and even the HD-580, more than the HD-650. The earlier headphones seem to present a more coherent musical experience (and I've tried a several cables with each of them, as well as going both single-ended and balanced).

I'll swap my 580s w/600 grills & Cardas 'smurf' cable for 'em. So you'd not be loosing out much. I'm in the UK.

I would try to trade them back to the store, and if that didn't work, burn them in for 2 to 3 hundred hours. What source and amp are you using?

I couldn't stand the 650s with the stock cable, they really need a after market replacement cable to sound their best.

The 650s require a long amount of burn in, a good amp, and a replacement cable, so they do require a lot more investment, but if you were happy with the 600s, just switch back and be happy

I also went from the 650's back to the 600's. Never heard the veil with the 600's, but on the 650 it was right there in my face.

I was willing to give them more of a chance, but the ergonomics of the phones were brutal on me. They clamped tightly and pressed into that sensitive spot behind your jawbone near your ear. I just could not wear them for more then an hour.

You cant possible judge how 650 sound like after just ~30 h of burn in... Give them at least 150h and after that tell us what happened...
