have little time, so i'll answer straight - have listened both and prefer my DT880'03, to me they sounded more natural!

Superb pair of cans!

Cheers

Unforunately I don't have the opportunity of listening to them before buying but by the reviews I guess i'll keep my '03s for the moment

I humbly disagree. IMHE the DT880/03 has much deeper bass, whereas the DT880/05 has more upper bass. In addition, I thought that the high frequency performance of the DT880/05 left much to be desired; they had nowhere near the extension, clarity and airiness of the DT880/03. In short, the DT880/05 sounds tragically rolled off at both extremes compared to the '03 model.

While the DT880/05 did address what I felt were deficits in the lower mids and, to a lesser extent, upper bass of the '03 model, the '05 re-design came at the expense of what I liked most about the DT880Pro/03: effortlessly extended highs and plowing deep bass. By comparison, the '05 model sounds bland w/nothing to recommend . . . at least from me. : )

Anyway, I have since been won over to the K701, but often think about a second go-round w/the DT880/2003.

I have read many pataburd's opinions on these and other headphones and what I found out is that while having similar observations, we've got different preferences. Pataburd prefers Proline 750's, I'd rather go for the 2500's. He says the K701's are great while I almost hate them for their artificial trebles, having ugly coloration and poorly resolving quick percussion sounds.
So, the final assumption is: I'm happy that I ended up with the DT880 Pro's 2005 edition.

By the way, we believe the recently revised DT880 to be just a smidgeon stronger in the low-mids/bass than previous DT880 editions -- probably due to the extra damping material in the earpiece housing and (maybe?) the "softer", more rounded earcup shape.

Alas! Another divided camp!

Well, the short of it is that Beyerdynamic did not make a repeat customer of me with their DT880/2005. I'm not alone in my nearly vehement preference for the DT880Pro/2003, and I certainly don't mind being part of a(n apparently) decided minority, either.

Majkel and I may yet see eye-to-eye (or is it hear ear-to-ear?) w/r/to the SR-325i, though. : )

On another note, I don't know why this kind of comparison always leaves out the original DT880, which after all carried the name for 23 years and was a revolutionarily good headphone, or for that matter the original DT990, so much better than the DT990 pro. These relatively cheap old headphones are not leagues behind their tarted-up successors, though they do have weird characteristics and problems all their own. They deserve a place at the table in these comparisons, even if they lose by a nose.

They are really great when well paired with the rest of the rig. Actually, I'd feel kind of guilty if you didn't enjoy them.

interesting, has there been any reports on here about that "normalizer"?
