does anyone have any opnions on the sound quality of the slightly older sony pcdps? I've found that if you scour around you can find the de771, de556, de885, de775, de905. the only feature i would like to have, but is not essential is a remote, so I don't have to reach the player to change tracks. I'm in the market for a new playerand am trying to decide.....I assume all these models come after the d777 but are before the dej### series. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I will use this for commuting to school w/o amp and at home w/amp(eventually). My other option is to go with a pana 570, 780.....One last thing does anyone think its woth it to wait for the next generation of sony or pana pcdps, or am I in fact better off looking for an older model in terms of sound quality at the sacrafice of battery life. Thanks for any input....Sorry for being so long winded.....

I wonder... is the Sony D-193/ D-200 any good? What's its headphone output power? (does it qualify as 'old'? It's carried in stores around here)

Mikeliu,
Are u sure that the D777 will sound as good as D-E905? I called the Sony center today, and the D777 has 1 bit dac, while the 905 equips with dual one bit. Both are very expensive though.
Can u describe the sound characteristics of the D777 produced? Thanks

I have a D-777 discman.I like it much because it sounds perfect good!It was recognized that D-777 sounds a little better than D-E905 whatever 777 has only 1 bit DAC or dual 1 bit DAC.

cdub, I think most of those cd players you mentioned would sound better than any of the current Sony or Panasonic pcd's and definately better than newer ones coming out. They aren't getting any better.

The D-193 and D-200 are cheap bottom of the line made in china cd players with digital volume control. From what I hear they sound really bad and they are really unreliable.

always,
I am not quite sure what are u saying about the d777 has one bit or dual bit DAC. Can u clarify that for me? Thanks and I love my d777 as well. However, my sharp md-ss323 beats the d777 to the ground.

The d777 has a one bit DAC. The other pcdp mentioned may have a dual bit DAC. This comparison was made in a previous thread long long time ago. As I remembered, one person said that the dual-bit DAC is better, but the d777 had a better amplifier output stage. In the end, they sound about the same. However, this was long time ago, so I don't clearly remember the specifics or this is even correct.

purk,
I can not express in English well. But i sure that 777's sound quality is much better than almost all recent sony and panasonic PCDPs.I have some PCDPs,such as D-777,D-335,D-E707,D-50.I prefer 777 and 335.I remember that 777 was remarked as a hi-end sound quality model in PCDPs.Maybe it's exaggerated, but 777 really sound beautiful!
I also believe that 777's sound can exceed all portable MD,include your sharp md-ss323(is it portable?). Whether a PCDP has a one bit DAC or a dual bit DAC is not important. There are many factors ,more that DAC,affect PCDP's sound.

Always,
I have the d777 as well, however, I prefer my sharp md-ss323 much more than the d777. The 323 is the only model of sharp that has 13 dsps and 64 combinations of bass and treble.
I agree that the d777 sounds beautiful, but well...my 323 just beat the crap out of it...by a noticeable margine. The high on my 323 is better, while the bass is a little deeper than the D777. With out question, the d777 is the best portable cd I have heard period!! The unit is also beautifully crafted as well.

Maybe!I never heard this model of sharp MD,is it a old one? So it's quite possible that it sounds better than 777.
But it also may be a stronger sound effect with 323.777 may has a more accurate and balanced sound ,while 323 is more decorated so that it makes up to ears. This is what I guess.

Always,
The 323 can be very impactful, yet precise. It depends on the combination of DSP u are using. Mine settings can be very accurate and very impact. This is the big advantage of 13 DSPs + surround sound.
I have the r900 and man.... the r900 is far away from my 323. By the way, it's the 1999 model. Japanese domestic only model. The 323 is just fun to listen to.

I have a Sony D-242CK, I use it as the CD player in my main system. It sounds alright, a good deal better then my cheapo Panasonic, and it actually has a line out but it skips extremely easily with the anti skip off, and the 3 second anti skip dosen't exactly do much either, not that I use it since it is sitting on top of my reciever.

I am sure all the older players sound better than the newer one, b/c of headphone amp, and battery life. All of mine pana and sony (D777, and D-465) sound noticably better than the the EJ925 and Ej01. To me, the j925, and j01 are real disappointment interm of sound quality.
