A long time ago, in a place far away, I had a pair of Pioneer Electrostatic headphones that I've wondered about for a while now. This was while I was in college, which would put the timeframe at about 1976ish. I wandered into a campus area hi-fi store and all of the employees were raving about these Pioneer electrostatic headphones that were this incredible value. I ended up buying apair, and remember having them for several years, and really enjoying the sound. Now, as I said, this was a LONG time ago, and I certainly didnt know high end audio like I do now. Still, though, I was a budding audiophile with the best stuff that I could buy, trade, or work for, while in college. I even built myself a Dynaco integrated amp with a whole 30wpc since I couldnt afford a pre-built one.
I remember a/b'ing them with some other phones, one of which, I believe was the the Koss Pro 4AA, and finding the sound level, soundstage and overall sound quality to be an entire order of magnitude greater. Now they were also likley brighter, showier and way less accurate too, as I said, I was just a college student and could be swayed by sheer impact. And as for being swayed by impact, I recall one of the pieces of music that they used to audtion them for me was Rick Wakeman's, "Six Wives of Henry the 8th", with all its bombast and excess.
They couldnt have been too expensive, in fact, I suspect they wouldnt have been too much more than $100.00-$125.00. Otherwise, I couldnt possibly have afforded them. I wonder if they were even electrostatic's though they did have the seperate amp/unit, etc.
Does anyone have any idea what these headphones were, or know anything about them? I honestly dont remember where they eventually went to, or much else about them, but I'm a little intrigued as to what the heck they were.

We must be about the same age??? The Machovlich - DelVecchio - Howe generation???

I got a pair, believe it or not, in my first year in college approx '77- '78. At the time, I also owned the Koss HV/1a's (a damn good headphone too). I picked up the Pioneer's for $45 at a hi-fi store going out of business in Montreal, without even hearing them, having only read in Stereo Review about electrostats. What a deal!!! (hey, for a student, it was still a stretch)... I hooked them up to my Pioneer Sx-737 receiver at the time (also had homebrew Altec A7a's).

Anyway, I was baffled at one time that I could not find any, I mean literally no information, on these Pioneer electrostats. Googled and AltaVista'd myself into a frenzy. I started to wonder if I had been dreaming, or perhaps they were another make.

Then one day, a pair showed up on eBay. Pioneer electrostats (broken though, otherwise I would have bid). Hooray .. I had not lost my marbles. It was also great to "jar" my memory. Because, because, because ....

The looked like this:

That's right. Sony must have made them and Pioneer relabled them for some markets. At least that is my theory, because my Pioneers at least, looked very similar to the Sony's in the picture.

Very fond memories of those phones ... They lacked bass, but otherwise, had that electrostat transparency that made me learn to appreciate good music & hifi at a young age. In fact, they spoiled me, because I did not find other, newer phones adequate after that for a very long time (Stax - wellfougedaboutit - could not afford it then as a starving student).

Do these look like the ones you had?

BTW - LOL -When I visited my mom this summer, she had finally thrown out all my vinyl collection which included Rick Wakeman's Six Wives of HVIII which was one of my favourite albums back then - yup all that synth really showcased those phones. Fond memories of The Strawbs, Boston, Supertramp, Moody Blues, Yes and Styx too.

They finally appeared on eBay again. The elusive Pioneer electrostatics. A little different to the Sony picture, but a strong resemblance.

At those prices, I'd expect them to levitate.

If you look at Inamora's profile, he is obviously a collector. He has been picking up all sorts of ESL cans on eBay. Maybe he knows something we don't?

I broke mine in the '80s sometime and just threw them out. Silly me!

Yes, it looks like he knows how to spend a lot of money on 30+ year-old electrets.

I bet either: (1) there is a serious secondary market for these somewhere, or; (2) he also had a pair many years ago and wants them again, possibly for nostalgia or maybe because they are superior to what is available today. Who knows?

You're right, that's ebay!

Good point--any idea as to how many years it takes to be noticeable?

Only some electrets lose their charge over time (and not necessarily due to use). At least that is my understanding.
Electrets that are "permenantly" charged such as my beloved AKG K340s will lose their charge over time. When I asked AKG how long will they last, they said that the expected life is 30-40 years. Not bad I guess. The K340s plug straight into a headphone jack.

Other electrets are charged by the higher power provided from a speaker output (by connecting to speaker outputs vs. line out) and are not likely to wear out supposedly. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
