A long time ago, in a place far away, I had a pair of Pioneer Electrostatic headphones that I've wondered about for a while now. This was while I was in college, which would put the timeframe at about 1976ish. I wandered into a campus area hi-fi store and all of the employees were raving about these Pioneer electrostatic headphones that were this incredible value. I ended up buying apair, and remember having them for several years, and really enjoying the sound. Now, as I said, this was a LONG time ago, and I certainly didnt know high end audio like I do now. Still, though, I was a budding audiophile with the best stuff that I could buy, trade, or work for, while in college. I even built myself a Dynaco integrated amp with a whole 30wpc since I couldnt afford a pre-built one.
I remember a/b'ing them with some other phones, one of which, I believe was the the Koss Pro 4AA, and finding the sound level, soundstage and overall sound quality to be an entire order of magnitude greater. Now they were also likley brighter, showier and way less accurate too, as I said, I was just a college student and could be swayed by sheer impact. And as for being swayed by impact, I recall one of the pieces of music that they used to audtion them for me was Rick Wakeman's, "Six Wives of Henry the 8th", with all its bombast and excess.
They couldnt have been too expensive, in fact, I suspect they wouldnt have been too much more than $100.00-$125.00. Otherwise, I couldnt possibly have afforded them. I wonder if they were even electrostatic's though they did have the seperate amp/unit, etc.
Does anyone have any idea what these headphones were, or know anything about them? I honestly dont remember where they eventually went to, or much else about them, but I'm a little intrigued as to what the heck they were.
