I've got a Realistic (Radio-Shack brand I think) CD-2000 cd player from 1986. My dad doesn't use it, but I have it as a transport, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to mod it, ie replace the DAC, capacitors etc. I don't have a schematic, so I'm not really sure what to do.

I'd bother only if it already sounded very good, and you wanted to improve it further. Typical mods include beefing up power supply filtering, bypassing the analog stage and taking the output from the DAC, etc. None of this stuff will help a crappy sounding player much though, unless you replace the DAC or do other radical stuff.

Edit -- if you're using it as a transport for an external DAC, beefing up the power supply filtering plus damping the transport might be a place to start.
