How do you celebrate the OktoberFest?

Many places in Germany have annual festival centered on beer tents
on the village green or town fairground. Some take place after harvest,
or mark summer's end. Munich's OktoberFest, the most famous such celebration,
has more formal origins. The first marked the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Qeen Theresia, in 1810.
The 16-day festival actually starts in late September.

Spaten OktoberFest (Munich) is traditionally the first beer to be tapped at the OktoberFest.
(Style: Marzen/OktoberFest)

Here is the sample of what we mean: OktoberFest in San Francisco
How about Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Texas, ....???

Please do NOT spoil the celebration by drinking commercially brewed beers like:
Budweiser, Miller ..., Coors, Colt 42, etc Is Budweiser, the King of Beers, World's Best Beer?

You must be at least 21 years old to participate in the OktoberFest celebration in America!
How about the rest of the world? Do they make any exceptions because of the OktoberFest?
See e.g. What Is the Legal Drinking Age In Your Country? or the wikipedia.com

See you on the OktoberFest

I was born and grew up in Germany. I remember as a young kid going to Oktoberfest. It was just a big carnival type thing with lots of food and rides. As I recall from history, Oktoberfest did not start out as being a fest for ,,bier.''

I'm going to an Oktoberfest party at the end of the month. Everyone invited, maybe 10-15 people, brings a different beer -- if possible, with an autumn/ fall harvest theme. Then, we sit and taste all the beers. A fun night. Definitely not a night to be driving.

Also, I looked at that Wikipedia link for drinking ages. It listed the drinking age in the US as 21, except for Maine, which it said was 18. FYI, the drinking age in the entire country is 21.

Who writes this stuff.

Away from Munich - it's the only sensible way, unless you're into watching drunk Italians and Australians and usually a bit less drunk Germans, many of the latter dressed up in Bavarian-style clothing despite otherwise not being Bavarian at all. Drunk people everywhere in the city and quite a few traces of what they couldn't keep with 'em. And every parking lot seems to be filled with Italian motor homes. The "Little Octoberfest" we used to have in July over at the American quarter in Munich/Fasangarten used to be a lot nicer - especially when there where still quite a few booths ran by the US Army. And I've long preferred smaller fests like the Dachauer Volksfest or the Auer Dult to the Wiesn, too.

In the tri-cities where I live there is a massive German population (one of them used to be called Berlin) that goes all out insane for Oktoberfest. Beer tents, parades, parties everywhere. And of course... checkstops! (cops checking for drunk drivers)

Word, lini!
I just realized last week or so, that in italian it's calles "Festa della Birra" (Beerfest) rather than Octoberfest. Maybe they just feel obligated...?

But it's not just tourists. I'm living close to Munich and for these past weeks you just couldn't use the train. In the mornings its stuffed with drunk people heading for the Wiesn and in the evenings it's the other way 'round. And there's altogether too much second-hand beer involved.

Just glad I'm not a regular commmuter...

Ignore Mr. Slacker's ire -- he's irritated by existence in general! (...cheeky monkey...) We should line up 40 1-liter steins of Oktoberfest brews in front of him and strap him to a chair bolted to floor -- kind of like Tantalus's torments for his bad boy behavior.

Although -- he might just be perverse enough to enjoy that!

Holy lederhosen, Batman! Just chatting about drunken Oktoberfest folk is making everyone surly.

Oktoberfest is great, I love it, but only if go there with >5 friends and manage to get a place in one of the better tents before or around noon. Otherwise, you're often, not always, stuck with drunken tourists, noisy kids, overly flashy and loud rollercoasters, sticky and beer-y grounds, people getting into brawls, people pissing outside despite a toilet being nearby, and all kinds of other things outside the tents that more or less (especially once you approach night time) stand for the lowliness of mankind.

On the other hand, you don't really need an Oktoberfest in order to get together with lots of friends, get drunk with them all day long, dance on tables, talk about soccer and other mindless topics for hours, hug each other randomly, sing along the most horrible and simplest and most guily pleasure-est of songs, make out in clothes reeking of beer and roast chicken - but it's an excellent pretext to do all that.

The Oktoberfest is a hell lot of fun and I can recommend it to anybody. The only requirements really are that you get there early or make reservations and bring as many friends as possible.

Actually, to my ears GL sounded brittle/glassy -- but as noted above, perhaps a small selection of fresh, seasonal brews could soften the edges.

A-a-a-a-nnd if that doesn't work -- and in the name of the Okto-festivities, perhaps this might help (self-imposed -- of course):

Tried to find some fun pics or videes of lovely fems at Oktoberfests around the world -- but most posts are jammed with beefy, drunken guys (high testerone). I even tried Japan sites, since they're big beer fans -- but no luck yet.

That might be true, but check the mirror for negativity levels! Glass houses, and all that. Focus on negative and you just reinforce negative. If you're posting in a troublesome/negative thread, then preach as appropriate. When in a non-adversarial thread, please respond in kind and you'll improve the Head-fi environment in general. As the saying goes, smile -- it improves your face value.

This thread is about Oktoberfest -- not unlike many other beer & booze threads.

Stay the (intended) course and practice what you preach -- please.
