Okay, so if I understand this...

I'm going to be acquiring an Onkyo surround sound receiver from my father for free, (yay, no money gone!) and I'll be connecting my computer to it so I can connect my bookshelf speakers to it. In order to do this, if I have my technology straight, I'll need to have a 3.5" headphone jack to RCA component jack adapter in between before I can connect the audio to the receiver and then just set up the speakers from the receiver. Is this correct?

..and if you add more channels if your receiver is a surround unit you just use more of those mini jack to RCA connectors. It's very easy.

Depending on the receiver you could also hook it up with an optical or coaxial cable.
