I haven't tried the K81DJ yet, but DJ headphones are usually superaural and put a high pressure on your ears (to prevent that they fall from the DJs head when he moves). I can tell from my Beyerdynamic DJX-1 that they sound very good, but it's impossible to sleep with them resting on my ears. It starts to hurt after some time ...
I'd rather go for for some circumaurals with big earpads that are well build (like Beyerdynamic DT 770 / 880 / 990 or DT 150). I can't recommend K501 as it's fabric pads are itchy, and the Pad of K340 are a bit small and get sticky because of the fake leather. Velour is really the best material for that case. I've also felt a lot of time asleep with my Lambdas and they are still not broken. They look flimsy, but they aren't. As the presure isn't that high the leather doesn't stick to your skin too.
The best solution would be to use some decent earbuds. The worst that could happen is that they fall out of your ears while you sleep. Sennheiser, AKG, Beyerdynamic and even Sony are making decent sounding ones that don't cost a fortune and if you really manage to destroy them in your sleep (which is very unlikely), then it's very easy to replace them for little money.
The cord on the K81DJs is kind of flimsy. Otherwise they are pretty solid. As long as you can withstand the pain of your head being squashed like a grape at an Italian wine festival, they will hold up pretty well.
Note: Sleeping with closed headphones has the potential for turning you into a Darwin Award candidate.
I have fallen asleep with my hd280 on my head, and the 650 is even more comfortable. but you can't really be sleeping on your side. when i did fall asleep it was back on a pillow on a bus ride to South Carolina. I've also fallen asleep with my ipod earbuds in, despite thier medoicre sound.
i agree. superaural would not be fun. you'd wake up and ur ears would be smashed up against your head. i'm not sure how comfortable iems would be as far as sleeping goes.
