Maybe I'm naive, but frankly I'm shocked at what I just discovered on eBay.
I went looking for a couple of old mono mixes of some of my favorite American versions of older Beatles records. For those not in the know, the older American versions (e.g. Revolver, Rubber Soul) are very different than the British EMI versions, in terms of content. Some of the songs (e.g. I'm Looking Through You, I'm Only Sleeping) are different mixes. Some of the albums (e.g. Meet the Beatles, Yesterday and Today) don't even have British counterparts (or if they do, the title and track mix are different). So I've been kicking around getting some of these old albums and transfering them to some kind of hi-rez format. Yes, I'm THAT big a Beatles freak!!
Or so I thought...little did I know that these mixes are already available on CD!!
Frankly, unless I've really missed the boat somewhere (which I seriously doubt), I'm thinking that there is an awful lot of bootlegging going on these days on eBay. I'm a bit stunned that this stuff hasn't been broomed off of eBay, and it leads me to wonder how it is that it's NOT. Maybe the powers who care about such things are not paying attention? Maybe they don't mind that it's happening?? Hard to imagine.
I came to posess one of these mocked-up album/CD's as a gift once - the "butcher boy" cover of the Yesterday and Today album. It's pretty clearly a CD mix, as I can tell the difference between the mix of an old American and their UK counterpart. I'm sure it was just burned off of CD. They also, interestingly enough, added a mono mix as well (again, I'm sure it's just a CD mix with a mono button engaged). Not bad, but not what I'm seeking for sure!! It's a scam...but still, it's a high quality scam. CD (not CD-R), with professional-looking jacket and label. Not bad....but again, not what I want!!
Sorry about the rant, but this just bugs me. Why can't I find what I want, and legally at that? I blame Michael Jackson for this...whether he's responsible or not, he deserves it.
Am I the only nut case out there??
