Audiophiles can't tell the difference between Monster Cable and coat hangers - Engadget

Those people were probably just wannabe audiophiles; aka "Bose is the best I ever heard!"

Giving us a bad name...shouldn't have taken the test in the first place, trying to boost their ego like that.

But I dunno...this could be saying that Monster Cables are indeed made out of coat hangers.

If you read the comments, you would see that people mentioned that the coat hanger is a solid rod, while the cable is braided. Supposedly, the coat hanger would get a better flow of electrons, but I am not a electrician. A better test would be the regular Radioshack wires vs. the Monster cables.

So, just look at the comments and you will see that this test is not "fair".

edwood did make this test and mailed 3 'unknown' cables out to the headfi members, had a big thread about it.

And but only one person got it totally right. Iirc, it debunked the common stereotypes associated with copper vs silver cables, etc etc...

For all I know, coat hangers can sound good. Virtual dynamics use very large gauge solid wires that are the thickness of your typical hangers and most users swear by them. The main differences being your coat hanger is probably made of some sort of steel alloy (not exactly the most ideal conductor), inconsistently coated with PVC 'dielectric' (vs massive garden hose), lacks ferrous sandblasting pellets, etc...

It's so weird, if IC's "don't matter so much" in terms of materials and build... why do many of us pay for expensive headphone re-cabling?

I agree that overspending on cables is overrated but at the same time there is a significantly noticeable difference between Sennheiser cables for instance, even between the stock 600 and 650 cables, once you get into upgrade territory the Senns lose their veil and have a much more up front sound.

I believe the opposite is true.

Electrons flow mainly on the outer-most layer of the conductor, known as the 'skin effect'. When you have stranded wire there is much more surface area or 'skin'. As I understand it, that's the difference between solid and stranded conductors.

But like you, I'll defer to an electrical engineer.

I tried using Monster Cable once.

Sloppy stuff. No inherent strength to it. My clothes ended up in a heap on the floor.

Coathangers definitely worked better.

Different materials for different uses.

Psh, who needs cables, I've replaced all my cabling with super silver cryo coated solid gold bricks. Since one of these costs more than most peoples' cars, it made my dollar store special earbuds sound better than anything. EVER
