I just bought a Fiio E6 for my upcoming roadtrip.   I have an ipod touch, (4th generation)
 
Am I going to need to buy a separate Line-Out-Dock thingy (LOD Cable) to connect the Fiio to my ipod?  Or will the 3.5mm-to-3.5mm jack work just fine?
 
What's the difference? Do they both work?

Yes, you do need a LOD cable. From LOD cable what you get is a line level signal for your E6. From the 3.5mm aka the headphone jack, the signal is already amplified by the ipod, to amplifier it again is not a good idea.

No necessary but the whole idea of the LOD is to just use the amp and bypass the iPod one. It will sound better!

You can just use the cable that probably came with the E6 to and for use with your iPod although using an LOD would be best.
