i wonder if anyone has DONE THIS MOD WITH SUCCESS as i read n another thread some where that the wire harness on the latest ipod classics that attach from the hard drive to the mother board are different? and may have to use a different harness to make it work?/??

yes it works. ALO said it would work and a member on macrumors forum installed a 128gb super talent in a 7g ipod it uses a pata zif ribbon like all other it does work.
 
Whatn you read is the 160gb fat ipod classic is ce-sata interface and requires another ribbon thats where ur confusing urself.

Thanks Freeze. I wish I would have seen your thread before buying it. I am not sure if I can get a refund and I will try to find out. The drive is rated at 5v +/- 10% so I guess it would work at 4.5V. Is there any way one can modify the Ipod to deliver 4.5V instead of 3.3V?

I have a Super Talent 128GB 1.8"ZIF (model # FZM28GF18H) that I cannot get to work with my 5.5g Ipod Video. When iTunes tries to restore the Ipod with the drive installed it hangs up in a loop trying to restart the Ipod. Itunes tries to restore it as a 30GB drive.

alo audio sells that exact ssd imod so you must have a faulty drive, try hooking the drive to your computer and formatting it to fat32 then installing it.

I have tried that, Itunes restore keeps reformatting it to a 30GB drive. The drive works fine as an external drive when installed in an external hard drive case.

I have a 5.5G 64GB SSD CF iPod Video, but was looking for more info on ZIF SSD's, since I'm no longer going to attempt a DIYMod with internal BG caps. I'll eventually be trying one of the new portable iDevice DAC's, like the CLAS or HP-P1.

this thread is awesome! i was doing some research to upgrade my 5.5g ipod video, and came across this thread. i had to register to post some positive feedback! my goal is to upgrade my ipod video to a 7th gen thin logic board and add a supertalent 128gb ssd. from the information here, looks like i should have no issues with that! i love my little ipod video, it just needs some up-to-date tweaks to live on.

As we wait for the new iPods/iPhones to launch next month my hopes of a much larger hd are dashed by the still high prices of the ssd drives.
Even if apple uses two 128 drives in one device it would cost too much.
How many years will we have to wait to carry all our lossless music with us?

Now there are 2 1.8" pata zif k3vlar drives. There is the k3 and the k3e. The e stands for efficient because it uses less power and operates at 3.3V. The k3 runs at 5V but it does have slightly higher reads and writes due to the increased power bit that increased power means no no for ipod. But the renice k3vlar is the fastest energy efficient 1.8" zif drive.  It is 140MB/sec read 90MB/sec write. And the read is really the only important thing in the ipod and those 4200 rpm 1.8" hdd you will be lucky to get 25% of the speed of the renice ssd (that'd be 35MB/sec) + theres the 15-20ms seek time vs .01ms seek time. So i'm fairly certain your whole ipod will be a very nice jump in speed and response time.
 
If you want large space high speed and high quality well the Renice K3vlar K3e is the way to go for ipods.
 
If you think of all the crazy amount of money people spend just for wires some uppwards of 500 dollars then 600 dollars for a huge 240gb ssd drive that not only gives you an extra 80gb over the stock classic drive but also boosts the speed greatly and increases battery life is not a terrible deal and you'll get more enjoyment from the ssd upgrade then you would with wires.
