Quality is good, to my ears sound is a little brighter than the 5th gen iPod.

The line out is good, the weak point is by far the headphone jack.

Agree with your guys, the line out is good, and the HP out is good for high impedance too, but crappy in driving low impedance earphones.
THD is very high with low impedance earphones, especially on the high frequency, appears to be brighter but are actually high frequency harmonics, unbearable to my ears.
This can be confirmed with the specs on WM8711/WM8731 datasheet.

@cmarti, what is the sound quality like in the 2G mini vs the 5.5g?

Are you guys just getting 4GB minis? I see a lot on eBay at decent prices. +/- $30. Thinking I'd love to add one to the collection. :-D

Er... um... yes :)

I actually started back in April when I fixed up an iPod Color and started playing with 4th gens.
In July, I picked up my first Mini (a blue 1st gen with backlight issues). Next was a 2nd gen silver (now 32GB) which my daughter has. Then came a blue 1st gen (now 16GB), a 1st gen silver, a 1st gen pink (for parts) and a 2nd gen Green (about to upgrade to 16GB).

There's a 1st gen gold on eBay calling to me, except that I've already blown my iPod budget for the week. :frowning2:

Hi guys, joining in the fray.

I also have a 5.5 gen Ipod which I use in my car. I believe this has the wolfson DAC. As we all know, the file types that can be played with this are kinda limited. Plus, it lacks the brilliance of highs and mids when I attach it to my car's HU via USB.

1. What sort of upgrades or tinkering can I do with my ipod?

2. Would it sound better if I use a 3.5mm jack to connect to my HU's aux-in rather than using the USB cable?

That is all for now.

Thanks.

I put a 128GB SD card in my 3G iPod. Works like a charm. One of the most unique iPods in my opinion.
