Official Ipod Video / Classic 5g+5.5g+6g+6.5g+7g SSD Mod thread

Hi guys. I have been reading this thread for a few days to monitor progress on ipod modifications. I've mostly been focusing on the CF mods to the Mini, Videos and Classics. I have Gen2 Mini w/64gb, a Gen 6 Classic w/128gb and a Gen 5.5 Video aiming for 256GB.

The gen 5.5 Video was born w/30gb and it works fine up to 128gb and 19,000 songs. When I got a 256GB PNY CF I hoped to finally dump my entire music library onto it 37,000 songs and 213GB. The reviews were all very positive with Tarkan's new firmware and the PNY CF.

I got the new Tarkan zif - SDXC package... and it almost worked!!! But it didn't. It would either show 0 songs or just hang during a forced reboot. Basically the same outcome that I got 10 months ago with my older adapter.

I thought maybe I had a bum adapter. I asked Tarkan for help and he emailed me that the 30gb Video seemed to only handle about 20,000 songs... Crap!!!

This is for the car so I cant go to RB.

My question to the thread, are the 30gb Videos limited to 20,000 songs via itunes?

Thanks,

The 30gb 5th and 5.5th gen iPod Videos are limited to 32gb RAM. They were only designed to handle 20-30K songs with the original Apple firmware. If you're going to go over that, you need to find a 60 or 80gb 5/5.5th gen. Those have the 64gb RAM as opposed to just 32gb. All the 60gb iPod Videos are 5th gen, and all the 80gb Videos are 5.5th gen. I successfully upgraded my 80gb 5.5 Video to the 256gb PNY and currently have 50K songs on it that play just fine with the original Apple OS.

Thanks. I guess I'll go to iDemigods and buy the 5.5g mainboard for the 80GB Video to be sure. I can't always be sure of these details if I go ebay.

PS - Is the battery and headphone jack the same between the 5 and 6 gens?

Oops never mind, iDemigods does have them in stock:

The only problem is you don't know if you're getting a 5 or 5.5th gen. The 820-1975-A with the 64mb ram could be either from a 60gb 5th or 80gb 5.5th.

If you're browsing eBay, you definitely know you're getting a 5.5gen if the serial number ends with V9P (white 80gb 5.5 Video) or V9R, V9S (black 80gb 5.5 Video) .

Venturing into a 5.5g 80gb I just picked up. In the process of re-ripping my collection into WAV. Any suggestions on how to transfer and keep the metatags? Using Foobar2000 to rip and Winamp to manage/transfer but open to change.

I use Exact Audio Copy to rip, and then use Foobar's freedb to update the tags. So much simple.

With all due respect, you should edit the above post for clarity and accuracy, both so that other members can better answer your questions, and so that newer members not become easily confused.

In your 2nd paragraph you mention "positive reviews of Tarkan's new firmware and the PNY CF", but Tarkan's new firmware is specifically for use with an SD adapter and thus you should have said PNY 256GB SDXC, not CF. I don't think PNY even makes a 256GB CF, I'm pretty sure the largest capacity CF card made by PNY is 64GB.

It is true that the latest firmware is related to the msata. However the firmware from tarkans cf to sd is also recently updated and is considered by many to be the safe bet for sd card usage.

Tarkan just helped me solve my boot issue. It involved downloading something called ipod catcher from the rockbox site. When I get back to a pc I will post more. You may need this with the pny 256gb solution.

Quick question. I just ordered the Tarkan SDXC adapter and use a 7.5 gen 160GB thin Classic, please tell me I can still use the original housing. Thanks for the help.

Yes you can, however you need the Tarkan bundle to replace the stock HDD, that SDXC adapter is only one of the two pieces needed.

That SDXC adapter just allows use of SD cards in place of CF, but you still need the ZIF to CF adapter board in the first place.

2 days ago I built my first msata-ipod 5.5g with a crucial 480gb, 2000mah from Alex, Rockbox and beyondwind-patch. With the help of the usb&firewire-cable-wallplug I filled it up with 200gb at once, without any problem. I am sooooooo happy!!!

one concern:
I drained the battery on purpouse as fast as possible. And yeah, at the end the iPod didn't corrupt at all. Just Perfect!!
But then I fully charged it and now I let it play endlessly flac-files without backlight on. But it seems that the 100 hours (as stated from Alex) won't be realistic :frowning2:
Did someone else experience the same?

Is it possible that the crucial 480gb drains a lot of energy, compared to the other ssds?

So as conclusion for further half-Terapod-iPods. Which ssd is the best to go for, in the aspect of energy-using, easy-to-use and so on?

Crucial 480gb
Samsung 500gb
Samsung 512gb

Looking so forward for your feedback while I am listening to music from my 480gb-5.5-iPod and thinking about the diymod, lol. Ah yeah, were do I get the "best" silver cable for the diymod???

I picked this up, iFlash SD-CF Adapter Bundle for $33.  That is all I need right? Well besides the memory card.
