Introduction

Welcome to the Official Hong Kong thread where we gather all the information regarding Hong Kong including (but not limited to):
  1. Shop locations and info
  2. Places to demo audio gear
  3. Time and Location of Meets
  4. Events
  5. Services

Hopefully, this will become a place where both people living here or planning to come here can find all the info we need without browsing through tonnes of threads finding info piece by piece. I'll keep this thread updated daily unless I go on a vacation (which is quite rare), I'm an active Headfier afterall

Hope everyone enjoy your stay ~

Audiophile from HK is one of the craziest in the world. And HK Audio industry is one of the most advance in the world too or at least in Asia. You can find all sorts of audiophile brand from hardware to snake oil in HK. I'm glad to see this thread.....I'm not from HK but I travel there from time to time so pretty familiar with the scene.

I frequented most of the shops above and here's my observation :
1. Kingsound (Golden Era Plaza) : average selection of full size headphone mostly Senn, Grado, AKG and some Ultrasone, pretty good selection of iem, some desktop/portable amp, lately also stocked a good selection of cables/ic. Service is good. Store is big and comfortable for long term audition. Good pricing. Bought my first gateway drugs to headphile from this store.

2. DMA Audio (Sim city/main store): very good selection of iem, cables and everything that has to do with headphone and more. Its vast array of selection of iem's can be quite daunting. You can easily spend the whole day auditioning in the shop if you dont have an idea what you wanted to buy. A vast selection of cables too and some selection of sources, amps also electrostat set up (stax). The pro audio (2 floors up at the same building) housed a good selection of sources from low end to entry level high end like Weiss (their entry level range), Esoteric (their entry level DAC) and more cable/ic/power treatment. Price is reasonable but prepared to haggle. I usually ended up with a price between 10-30% lower than their web published price. Service is average. Auditioning in the shop is not very comfortable since the shop is quite a small shop (typical HK shop).

3. Mingo (main branch) : The best selection of everything. And they are the pioneer of headphone shop in HK. Comfortable shop, service also not bad. They have everything under the sun You name it, iem, source, dap, amp, full headphone, stats, cable, i/c.......But they don't carry really high end sources like DMA Audio. Downside : expensive price. Little room to negotiate with them. They're the most expensive headphone shop of the 3.

The rest I havent been to. Another tips is that around the same building as DMA Audio there's a lot of headphone shop popped up. Feel free to shop around if all you wanted to shop around for best price. Most of these shops let you audition their headphones and you can try the headphone you buy first so that you chance of getting a fake is greatly reduced. I know Jaben also have an outlet diagonally across from DMA Audio building.

Well that'll be great if anything's planned!

In Hong Kong there's just sort of a difficulty to get a place large enough and quiet enough for these sessions....And maybe tables and electricity, whatsoever
Looking forward to the 17th Feb meet and hope to see post-meet impressions!

Well general suggestion is not to get those Beats and Bose or Sennheiser IE8(?) knockoffs from street markets, else you're pretty much good to go without getting a fake product.

By any chance if I haven't understood your location wrongly, are you also in Seattle?

Not so fast!

We postponed the meet to next Saturday (23rd February) because Gino couldn't make it today.

Stay tuned for details, but the meet will now be held somewhere within PolyU on the 23rd starting around 5-6pm.  There will be a geek fest called BarCamp held next door at the same time (Saturday to Sunday for that one, actually)
http://www.barcamp.hk/

Will you be able to make it on this new date?

Well in all honesty, skiing in Hokkaido should be more fun than a head-fi meet so good for you

Hong Kong head-fi meet!

The host thought the meet was for tomorrow =.= We were lucky to get a room at all.  Didn't get to hear his Sony R10... coz he was going to bring it... tomorrow
Did I mention we were lucky to get a room?  And what a room!  He's head of a department and we made ourselves at home in his department office

5 people at the meet including me on the left

I think this pic sums it up best:  Boris shows up with the goods looking bawss

Boris looking bawss

Project-H looking bawss

Some notable equipment that made it to the meet:
Project-H (pictured above)
iBasso DX100
AKG K550
AKG K518
Klipsch X10

I can't comment too much on the sound unfortunately as I was too busy chatting with the meet goers and busting my gut at their crack jokes
biggrin.gif
And we had too much fun to find time for such petty things as having dinner
