Official Denon AH-C700 Comparisons/Impressions

I thought I'd post a link to a quick comparison I just did with the new Sennheiser IE8 earphones. To be fair, they are over 2X the cost of the Denons, so, read up expecting to hear that the Denons fell behind somewhat. Are the Sennheiser's worth 2X + difference? I am not sure.... but they are more refined. I thought it would be an interesting comparison, especially since both are dynamic driver earphones.

How regularly do you guys replace tips on your IEM's? Ive got a set of the C700's for almost a year now and have been using the original tips since day 1. Ive been noticing lately that the damn things don't stay in and seal as easily as I remember they once did... think its time for a change

Have you wiped then down at all with an antiseptic wipe or something?
Maybe they just need a good old clean

But a year with the same tips sounds pretty good to me. I used to change mine every few months. I'd just clean them up, put them away, stick on a fresh pair and rotate them with my well-stocked 'stash'!

cn11 - Thanks for the link. I'll put it on the first page.

What is the difference in sound quality and sound signature with the C551 and C700?
I know people have talked about it before, but I didn't find many first-hand posts that really explained the difference well enough.
I can get the C751s for 100 bucks at Amazon US and the 551s for 50 bucks.

Also... uh... oh yeah how is the durability? I've only used the MDR EX71s and they stand up to pretty rugged use. Will I need a case for these?

From what I read, 551's have more bass quantity but less detail than the 700/751's. I'd recommend going for the 751's for $100 bucks, they are very nice phones.
I always use a case to keep dust/dirt off the tips. As for durability, I havn't abused or been too rough with mine so I can't say too much about it. I think the worst I've done is step on mine by accident but they are aluminum and held up perfectly fine

Hi, I am looking at the Denon 751s as a replacement for my SE210s that have suffered from cable cracking around the ears.

I have found this wonderful thread but at 121 pages I am struggling to make my way through it.

So I have a couple of questions which I hope you will kindly answer for me.

Can you now get replacement tips for them and if not what are the best ones to get to maintain the same fit and sound quality?

What is the best way to clean wax off of the inside so as to avoid blocking them up completely, which is what happened to a pair of Sonys I had previously.

I was thinking of buying a pair of Super.Fi 5 pros. Anyone know if there is a comparison review anywhere? The reason for this is that I can get the Denons for £35 cheaper than the Super.Fis and I also think being Aluminium they may be more durable than the Super.Fi plus I love the sound of the "magic cable" as that bugs me to death with other earphones. In fact how is the durability overall on the Denons?

Apologies for not digging through the thread for these answers but I am wanting to make a purchase this weekend and the sheer size of this thread is intimidating.

The Denon tips are lousy. That's why most of us use the Comply, Sony, or Koss tips as replacements...

I use Q-Tips to clean my ears so I've never had ear wax plug my Denons, Shures, or any IEM. Q-Tips are a lot easier and cheaper than having to clean out the IEM. Don't treat the problem, eliminate the cause.

I only have Shure E2Gs to compare the C700s too, but for me they have different purposes. The E2Gs have recessed highs and a lot less bass than the C700s with a lot more isolation. Those characteristics are great for sleeping on an airplane with background music. I have a set of Ety 4s that I just received that need new posts so they're getting shipped to Ety for repair, then I can compare them.

I have to be honest I am not all that comfortable shoving cotton buds into my ears to clean them. I think many a medical practitioner will advise against it

I live in the UK are the comply tips easy to obtain here and do you need to mod them in any way tp get them to fit the Denons?

I use the train every day and the London Underground so sound isolation is important to me but if this can easily be solved with comply tips on my Denons then I can live with that.

The Comply T-400's just slip right on those Denon's.

I can't help you as far as availability in the UK goes though.

Fair enough, but I don't shove them in far enough to cause pain, though a former coworker of mine did manage to rupture his ear drum with a Q-Tip when he slipped in the bathroom at the time he was cleaning his ears. My doctor and Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist do not have a problem with the proper use of Q-Tips and their use has significantly reduced my tendency to get ear infections or sinus infections. I guess it's definitely a personal preference and ask your doctor about it if you have concerns, but my IEM tips last a long, long time and I've never had to clean out crud from my IEMs.

You can also make a saline solution with hot water and pickling salt (don't use table salt). Soak your ear canals, then suck out the water with an aspirating bulb. Definitely cleans out a lot of the wax too. I have to do that about once a month per instructions from my ENT along with a similar process for my nasal cavities. I have to say, it's much more uncomfortable in the nose, but it does really help my sinus and allergies.

I got Comply T400s from Adavancemp3players, under £15 for 3 pairs.

They do improve isolation, bass becomes more present and listenable in noisy environments, I find a very slight muffling of the highs.

I use mine for the CTA L trains (Chicago Transit Authority) and it blocks it well enough. I've been on the London Underground and I was astounded at how quiet and smooth it was compared to the L. I'm pretty positive that it'll do a great job. No modifications required either.

If you've never tried foam tips and you don't like shoving things up your ear, I don't know if the Comply's are for you then. There is no danger but if you have something against it then you might want to find something else although I've tried both the Sony and Denon tips and they both didn't do much.

If you do decided to use the Comply's, you should probably clean your ears more often.
