From the specs it seems like it has powerful output for the size and price, and it looks beautifully machined. I was curious about Hiby only because in the listing on AliExpress it has a picture of the M1 with an iPhone answering a Siri query and I thought it implied there was a way to control the M1 through the iPhone, which would typically imply HibyLink compatibility.
Also, I'm a sucker for volume wheels! I assume that's a digital volume wheel, not an analog pot, and is it dedicated to volume? Or does it also double as a way to select things?

I know this isn't a DAP, but it should be fit for this thread, since I gather that this is where people gather for DAC/AMP units as well Made in China, by a really famous company
HIDIZS Tempotec Serenade iDSD is what I'd call an interesting desktop DAC/AMP, really affordable at just 140USD, pretty well made, and a lot of driving power for the money! More info in the full article: https://www.audiophile-heaven.com/2018/12/hidizs-tempotec-serenade-idsd-review.html

Have had very little time with it so need to figure out some things. Volume wheel is digital 0 - 30. I was listening at 12 - 15 with the 1More H1707. Plenty of power for them. Only 7 hours battery life as stated...I left it running to check. Maybe 3 hours to charge?
You can scroll through albums and songs with the wheel but you have to use touchscreen to select, pause/play etc.
No gain selection. No gapless on/off...not sure yet which is the default as I don't actually have a gapless album on it yet.
Artist view and album view are useless....the songs within are in alphabetical order. With folder view, the tracks are in the correct order. When one album ends the next will play ( no on off for that).
There are a couple of things that need to be corrected. There is an icon for Folder view on the main screen that doesn't work..just says no files. A sub menu under the Music icon does work but is mis labeled All Songs. Should say folder because there is another option called all songs that actually is. I will try to get some photos of that tomorrow.
It is easy to return to the Now Playing screen. When you power up you have the option to resume where you left off.
There is an option to shuffle all songs.
I don't think you can make playlists,
I have not tried the dedicated line out but it is nice it is there.
Sounds good and feels great in the hand with the leather case..no idea if it is real leather.

Thanks for the extensive rundown of feature and usability on the M1, @mbwilson111 Sounds kind of like a neat device overall but with some strange warts.

Sharing a photo that compares the size of the obscure M1 (middle) with the Cayin N3 (right) and Ruizu A50 (left). I bought the leather case for the Ruizu. The M1 came with the case. The Cayin comes with a silicone case that is very practical but I usually take it off for photos because the metal is so pretty on the Cayin. All three are well built.

Your sure the one on the right is an A50? I have an A50 and it is the same size as the Shanling M1 .. I would think they were manufactured in the same factory, except the A50 does not have the scroll wheel the M1 has...

oops.. meant the Cayin is on the right and the Ruizu on the left. Edited the original post... but yes that is a Ruizu A50.

My Ruizu.. the one in the brown leather case is the same size as a Shanling M1 and it has the scroll wheel on the top right corner. What I hate about that wheel is having to press it at a weird angle to select things. The M1 wheel just moves like you would expect and is protected from accidentally changing volume in your pocket.
You can see the wheel on the Ruizu in my photo.
I thought I never wanted another volume wheel but this one is ok. I probably would never have ordered it though. My husband ordered it ... trellus's fault. He forgot he had ordered a Hiby R3 which came the day before the M1. So..... you can figure out the rest.... I did give him my Hidizs AP60 MKII which certainly has a more refined UI but for some reason the M1 is more intuitive for me.

The M1 has that lovely serif font that used to be so prevalent in Chinese DAPs. I've always seen it as a sign of lack of polish, because does anyone think that font is easier to read than almost any other one?
Thanks for the comparison image. I have an A50, and I'm still trying to decide if I like it (also have an AP60II and new AP80, a Chenfec C50, and an old Clip Zip - I do not have a problem).

LOL, wait, I wasn't singing its praises by any means, I merely asked about it cuz it looked it interesting but there were no reviews I could find anywhere -- and then when someone else said it was terrible, I thanked that person for "the heads up".... @HungryPanda did a stealth buy, I think, cuz I never remember him mentioning that he was going to buy it.

I kind of like that font, too. Thanks, @mbwilson111 for sharing the high-res pic!

I like the AP50 for what it is. I got it pretty cheap. I do wish it had gapless play and I wish it read tags better. It is quirky.
The photo was so people could compare sizes.
Yeah that font... not the best but I have seen worse. I have one Dap that is hopeless because the font is even smaller and very crowded together. I can't read any of it without a magnifying glass. At least I can read the one on the M1. My Cayin is great because there is an option for small, medium, or large fonts. I use large. I wish they were bigger on the playing screen but at least other screens look like this.
using custom firmware to get that black background.

He bought it immediately after you posted! Never said a word. The other guy posted the next day but I have not heard any of the problems he mentioned. Impulse buying at its finest... or worst...

Yeah, sounds like that other guy got a lemon -- that's the thing with assuming a problem with a unit is a general problem with the product and posting as if it were vs considering that one might have a defect!
As an example, another sad story (besides getting a box of watches instead my IEM's recently, lol) recently for me from AliExpress is that I got my TRN BT10 cable, and it has GREAT sound quality to my ears (connected to my TRN V80), goes quite loud, and is comfortable... but has a definitely audible squeal that is always there in the background, loud enough to be audible during normal music listening, though not so bad if the reproduced audio from the source is dense enough -- but any break in that source audio and that squeal is just there whistling / chirping along, and you can tell it's from the circuit, some kind of bad interference that only goes away when you pause for long enough for the mute relay to kick in (and it takes about 4 seconds, before which you can really, really hear that squealing in its full "glory")...
...however, I have not heard that mentioned by anyone else reviewing that Bluetooth cable, so I'm pretty sure I just got an unlucky defective unit, and so I contacted the AliExpress seller and he asked if I would just take a $4 refund (I had paid just under $20 for the item) rather than ship them back -- and so that's what we settled on.
But yeah, back to the M1 -- sounds like that other guy had a lemon, since you've not heard any of what he reported.
Now, can I blame you and @HungryPanda if I impulse buy it, too? You since you posted that huge, high-res picture and reported your impressions on it, and @HungryPanda for buying it to make all that possible, right?
