I've noticed that there are some major Porcupine Tree fans around here, so I just wanted to point out that NPR has given them a brief, highly complimentary mention online, complete with a link to a stream of "Sentimental." The brief article is entitled "Progressive Rock Gets Mordantly Witty."

You can tell the author is writing about a prog band because she feels free to use an SAT word like "mordantly." <g>

Popmatters recently wrote a glowing review of Fear of a Blank Planet...

It's good to see the band getting some love

Yes, a very positive review, and the link to the full album stream at the bottom is an excellent plus. About to go there now. Edit: turns out that the stream offers excerpts, not full tracks. Still a nice way to get a taste. Can't blame them for not giving away the store. There's also a downloadable sampler of excerpts on their MySpace Music page (http://www.myspace.com/porcupinetree)

One fact mentioned in the NPR story startled me. There guys have been around 20 Years? Yikes, I first heard of them about a year ago!

As Count Floyd used to say, "Very scary, kids, very scary." But not nearly as scary as the prospect of my own 47th birthday, just a little less than two months off. Can I get a recount?

When that first mailing from the AARP arrives, I hope someone has the good sense to put me under a suicide watch...at least that's a few years away.

Any suggestions for a good introduction album to this band? I've heard of them for a while and like the comparisons to Radiohead...just never got around to listening to them.

There are a few other threads asking the same question... Usually, the past seven albums or so are recommended--it all depends on which PT style you like.

Radiohead has been my favorite band for almost a decade (and I'm 23!), and In Absentia was my wonderful introduction to Porcupine Tree, so I'll recommend that one.

Listening to Fear Of A Blank Planet as I read this and would recommend it highly!

Good to see the band getting attention. Am listening to "Fadeaway" from Up the Downstair as I type.

Am in a major PT period of my life. Saw them a couple weeks ago... they had an opening band called 3. Turns out they (3) were very good!
Anyway, excellent show.... Highly recommended if you can to see them live.

RE: recommendations to get started... depends if you're more into the ambient/trippy sound vs. the more rock sound. I'm more inclined toward rock so would suggest starting with Deadwing and In Absentia. I'd started off with Recordings after a recommendation from a fellow Head-Fier (thanks!!!), but didn't get into them initially. Took a couple years in fact. But, PT has now totally gotten into my soul. Have been listening to little else consistently over the past month or so. It seems every time I start to think about what to listen to, I scroll down to PT.

I am glad that this great band is getting some love.

they were simply GREAT in Boston, and the new album is my favorite of 2007!
