ok as of now i have more or less narrowed my headphone choice down to 3 different models

1. Sen HD600
2. B.Dynamic DT990
3. Ultrasone HFI 780

i will figure out which amp i need to get afterwards, but right now i am wanting to know what you yourself might know about any of these headphones. I am swaying toward getting the HD600s because because of thier apparent more 'laid back' sound, (aka not hurting your ears with ''realistic'' percussion noise and treble.

the DT990s were ranked #1 on a large list of headphones of Reviewed.com and im sure they are awsome but then this is kind of stupid but i dont like how they look(?) i mean its semi valid if im going to use them for years and years.

then those FHI 780 headphones some people said some really nice things about them how they have very very good stereo sound positioning and everything sounds really...'natural' and well there wasnt a single bad review about them. buT im not sure about the soundstage they are talking about with gaming if i would like it or not compared to regular stereo, that and they are close backed headphones which might be a bit too stuffy during the summer.

though i am kind of wanting some open backed headphones because i never use my headphones in public types of situations and would like to be able to hear myself talk and hear if there is someone banging on my door or whatnot.

As for what i am using the headphones for, i am not recording music, i dont NEED such good headphones and i would probably be better off spending less money on something that would suite my needs just fine, but i honestly just want to get something a little overkill just because.

I got the typical 'use at my computer, playing games, listening to music ect.' but then i would also like to be able to use them if i am taking a long roadtrip and listen to my mp3 player with them as well. fairly typical.

if you have any suggestions on what particular strengths or weaknesses any of these headphones have please tell me. Please give me another suggestion also if you like but i am probably going to spend at least $250. I will srsly not buy another pair of headphones after this for a long time.

AFAIK, the HFI-780 will be the easiest to drive from an MP3 player. Put some Beyerdynamic DT250 Velour pads on them and they will be very comfortable and sound great. I just got ALO-780 for $350 shipped and they are fantastic, it will be a few weeks until I get the Velour pads though. The stock pads dig into my jaw a bit which is annoying. I can power them from my Walkman X1060 at 17/30 volume and I use my Westone UM3X at 13/30 on the same Walkman, so these are easy to drive

I will try them for gaming very soon but for music, these are WONDERFUL. I am now listening to pop instead of death metal all day long

. Their bass extends deep yet is still not boomy and it very detailed with the high's, great for dance and pop. It's pretty much perfect for me

The soundstage is great, wider than my Grado SR-225 that I just sold but what makes it really special is the instrument separation. everything is so perfectly spaced and I can hear everything so clearly and easily!

What genre's of music do you listen to?? Which MP3 player will you use them with? What's your computer sound card?

Well, i've got the HD650's, i've just sold my HFI-680's, 780's and Proline 750's, and I wnat a pair of DT990 pros, because I tried my friends pair for a few hours and I was knocked off my feet.

The HFi's are quite metalic sounding things, I wouldn't call them 'Neutral'. However, when it comes to sheer power and performance, I love the Ultrasone DJ range ... HFI's on steroids. I found the beyers to be good at the top end, the lows to be tight and controled however where's this famous 'Beyer' bass?? Still on my shopping list though.

The HD650 are good, but my HD650's are hard to drive. Until I got my little RSA Hornet (not the most powerful amp i know) I didn't see the point in the HD650's.

I hate to say it, but the easiest set to knock out of the list is the 780's. for me it's a toss up between Beyer and Sennheiser. However in comparison I still find the Senn's a touch veiled. The Beyers sound touch bright, but soundstaging was good... very crisp.

I just got the ALO-780. The only other Ultrasone I would be getting is the PRO 900. The ALO-780 to me sound absolutely fantastic so that's all that matters

I am still wondering how much of an improvement the PRO 900 would be and with a re-cable job, even better! It would probably be the ED9/ED8

The HFI-780 are terrible stock FWIR but with the ALO mod, they are very, very good. IMO the two Ultrasone's worth buying are the ALO-780 and I will have to say the PRO 900 even though I have not heard them. The ED8 and ED9 are extremely overpriced for their performance but they are flagships, so what else is expected

Just so you know, the DT990's are known to be quite bassy which you may or may not like. Personally i've been looking at the DT880/600 over any DT990 model.

If you haven't had any introduction into hifi headphones just yet, i would recommend starting out on say an ATH-AD700 if you're going to be playing games. FWIR, they're great for gaming and do nicely on your wallet compared to what you've mentioned.

I used to have a pair of HD555's which were nothing too special, but they were nice.

If you go down the DT880/HD600/DT990 route.. you are -definitely- going to want a good sound card/DAC and possibly a headphone amplifier. Onboard soundcards tend to be very lacking in terms of sound quality and ability to drive more powerful headphones. Just to calrify.. DAC/Sound Card is what will convert your mp3s into an analog signal, obviously some will do it better than others. Amplifier to control the loudness (note: not all amplifiers are the same). Sound cards will have small amplification units in it which sometimes suffice.

I wouldn't recommend shopping at the DT990/HD600 price range first time round unless you're prepared to read a lot of posts :p

Ps. currently using my DT770/80 at the moment for gaming (MW2

) and it works fine. Very bass heavy though.

i had some HD555s before this, gave them to my brother for christmas. They were pretty nice. but im sure i could get something even nicer though it will indeed cost more money.

i have a good soundcard already. i just need an amp/DAC or whatever is going to properly drive my headphones but i will worry about that once ive decided which phones i want.

well music wise i dont listen to much acoustic stuff i mean i do like my bass and listen to a certain amount of techno/dance music but of course i could always hook the headphones up to something where this could be adjusted somewhat. mainly just wanting a balanced sound that isnt going to have certain frequencies hurt my ears if i have the volume turned up.

well, the hd600 and dt990 will sound anemic until you get one. When will you be getting an amp?

I dunno about the stock HFI-780 bass but the ALO-780 is said to have a bit less bass but the mids and high's are improved with the bass tightened and given more punch. I find that it has almost perfect bass (a tad too much) which is very punchy and tight.

im going to order them at the same time, im just figuring out what headphones i want first, because the first thing that people will ask you when you are trying to find an amp you want is: "what headphones are you using.?"
