) and he commissioned me to get him one. i had nowhere to turn and figured since you guys are in audio you can point me to the right direction.

Kareoke? I don't know... for Shure SM-57 is the cheap "king of all mics" type deal that's good for basically... everything.

The Shure SM-57 is definitely a fantastic dynamic mic. Trashy, lasts forever, good for vocals, etc.

It's almost more worth it to buy one used from ebay or something.

Just make sure that the person holding it doesn't put their hand over the ports along the side of the mic just under the head...feedback city! (some singers do it all the time, and then blame it on the sound guy...graah!!)
