I've been lurking and researching on the forums for a few days, but I think it's time to consult the experts directly.

I know this question has been asked before, but is there such a think as a budget iem that has a similar sound (and particularly soundstage) to the Koss ksc75? I recently got the the 75s, and I LOVE the sound.  I can't believe they only cost $15.  However, there  are times where I would prefer the inconspicuousness and sound isolation of an iem.  I realize that the on ear, open back design contributes greatly to the sense of soundstage, but I'm wondering if the technology had advanced to a level where this could be at least partly replicated in an iem? Here's a previous thread I found on this topic, but I'm wondering if there's any new info since then? http://www.head-fi.org/t/473618/iem-that-matches-the-sq-of-the-ksc75

Being a noob, I have very little to compare to.  The phones I've been using (but not really regularly) for years are the Creative ep630.  They're ok, I guess, but for me the Koss absolutely blew them away.  Not fully understanding all the lingo about sound signatures and such, I struggle to define what it is I like about the Koss phones.  Light, airy, expansive...big soundstage, perhaps? I also got some Panasonic 120s as inexpensive gifts, and I've listened to them a bit.  The sound of the Creatives is richer, but they don't sound bad for  being almost free.

Even if I can't achieve the openness of the Koss sound, which budget iems come close, or have a similar sound? I could spend up to $50, but cheaper is better.

Right now I'm considering the Vsonic GR06 Base Edition (which seems immensely popular on these forums) and the Soundmagic E10.  I listen to all different kinds of genres, with the exception of rap, metal, and punk.  I'd say I'm particularly fond of electronica (especially ambient and trance), jazz, classical, acoustic, worldbeat...the list goes on and on.  Thoughts?

A lot of people liked the Sennheiser CX 300 so you can try that first.

cx300 is too bassy compared to a ksc75 haha. the E10 is too bassy as well. the GR06 bass edition has alot more bass than a ksc75 if i recall correctly.

True, I would like to recommend the Sleek Audio SA1 but it is $70...

Thanks for the replies.  I don't know that I'm against bass per se.  My problem is that I haven't had many phones to compare to.  Are there any iems under $50 that have an impressive soundstage? It seems to my layman's mind that having a larger driver and roomier enclosure might help to give a sense of more spaciousness? I really have no idea.  I'm a noobie...theorizing.  I've also got a Monoprice 9927 on the way.

That's going to be tough for $50, but the Vsonic GR06 Base Edition seems to be a good pick for you at that price.  A long time ago I made the mistake of buy lots of cheaper and crap sounding headphones (Sony EXs... I had almost 10 pairs at $50-$70 a pop), and not ending up with the sound I like.  Finally I decided to save up an just get a pair of decent IEMs at $100 range (V-MODA Vibe I), and you know the reset of the story by looking at my sig...  So what I suggest to you is to start saving up now, and get a good pair of IEM at $300-$500 range and never look back.  Trust me, you will save a lot on the long run this way.

Whoops, I meant to write Vsonic GR02 BE, not GR06.  Based on my experiences with other mid to high end products, I understand what you're saying about jumping into the high end at >$100, but I'm just not ready for that.  Also, the journey from here to there is part of the joy as well, right? Thanks for the response.

I once owned a Phlips SHE9800 and the soundstage was pretty much living up to the hype, considering that they were cheap.

I heard some good things about Vsonic in general so it should be a good pick.  I think I need to mention that before the Sony EXs a long time ago, there were practically no IEMs, and now even the lower end stuff sounds decent.  However, I do recommend to get some apps like SonicMax Pro (or any other BBE apps, some free) or EQ-10 so you can tune your sound to some extend without breaking the bank.

Yeah, that's partially the reason I'm aiming for a lower price bracket.  I'm getting the distinct impression that there have been huge gains in the performance/price ratio just in the last few years.  I like your tip about the equalizer apps, though.  I've been meaning to look into that.  Thanks.
