I am looking for headphones that cost less than $50. I need something that is portable (gym, while travelling & the office) and doesn't leak too much sound. I would also prefer if it filtered some ambient noise.

From what I have read this far, MX500s seem to be the ideal choice, followed by RP-HJE50, MDR-EX71 or MDR-EX81. Can't really get the Shures/ETYs 'coz they are outside my budget and the KSC35s 'coz they seem to leak too much. Although, after reading the forums I may end up buying the KSC35s just to check out what the hype is all about

. Can someone help me here?

TIA.

Thanks ghopper. But, I am looking for something smaller...ear-bud / ear-canal types. Based on what I have read here, I would probably get the HD201s if I wanted something bigger.

They fit all your qualifications, but kinda suck...
Senn HD-202.

Look into the HD-201.

Sucks; before today, the silver CX300s were 40 bucks on amazon.

Oh well, I got my er6i's from J&R for 95 bucks, they better be worth it

MX500 wouldn't work for you as they do not provide isolation. Typical of earbuds, the MX500 do not seal the openings to your ears.

The other three you listed would be better choices.

I owned the EX71s for a short period of time (the cord started tearing and one day I went to go put them on and the right driver was missing..) and all I could remember was that they were comfy when I stood still. As soon as I started walking the one side started pulling out of my ear and the noise of the cord rubbing on my clothes was amplified (forgot the name of this phenomenon). So I figure these will not be good for gym use. Just a heads up.

my ex71's cord hasn't started to tear or anything yet, and i've had it for a while now (1 1/2 yrs?). Also, the design is meant for the wearer to put the wire for the right earphone behind their neck. if you don't do that, yeah it tends to tug on your left ear. I actually give them two thumbs up for gym/running.

I've had the EP630's and they sound very good for the price, they seal off such an amount of noise from outside that you've got to watch out when in traffic because you won't here the cars comming.
