When I got into beer (not in an alcoholic way), some of my friends could appreciate, say, a nice belgian dark like Delirium Tremens. Most didn't. They could certainly tell it was different, but they stuck to Budweiser (actually not a bad American Adjunct) or *shudder* Coors Light. If they were going to stay with adjuncts, I'd try to steer them towards Pabst, as it's actually a really good version of the style (and cheap to boot!).
As a citizen in a country that shares borders with Belgium (the doubles, triples etc.), Germany (the pilseners) and has England (stouts, lagers and bitters) close, I can say a lot of people understand and appreciate nice beers here. "La Vieille Salme"<--fantastic Belgian one
