and akg k812's... The king of cans that can be driven by a smartphone imo... Although, some people on here seem to listen to music too loud to use an open back can in a quiet environment, and call people who use them in public stupid... I can use my cans just fine and not bother others. Actually, people with beats bother others more than I do with their music.

Nah mate, the Stax 009 is the king of efficient headphones capable of being driven from a smartphone kappa~
yeah, I meant a quiet public environment... And, on the bus, I can turn it way up and not bother anyone, so I'm okay using it as a portable. I'll have to try a Grado sometime... Do they have any cheaper ones with a detachable cable? I've seen one of their 1200$ models for sale in my area on Craigslist. :-/ I believe it was rs-1?

Grados don't come with a detachable cable, that's something you'll have to mod yourself (or ask someone else to do for you). If you want to try a grado, I think most people chose the SR60i to start off with.

Nope that one doesn't count as it can't be driven by a conventional amp, besides the 007 is more inefficient.

The TakeT H2 on the other hand.. That one doesn't require a special amp but is insanely high impedance and inefficient.

It was a joke

the 009 is the furthest thing from portable as it's hella expensive and requires an electrostat amp which makes it an absolute no-no to take outside.

Far as I know the only Summit-Fi can that is actually marketed as a portable is the T5p. I dunno about the K812, apparently they don't seem to be made for portable use. Are there any other Summit-Fi cans that are marketed as portables?

The K812 are efficient yes but they're also open-backed which doesn't make them ideal for portable use. I think the LCD-XC is also marketed as a (rather large) portable but not sure on that. As far as I know almost all summit-fi cans are open-backed (for a good reason too).

  Fostex TH-900?

I see them more as headphones to be worn in a cafe than true portables because if they leak as much and have the isolation (or lack thereof) of the TH-600s and AH-Dx000 series then they wouldn't really be great, say, out on the street. I don't know though, I've never personally tried them myself in that kind of situation.

The Ultrasone Edition 8 costs more than the T5p and is marketed as a portable.

Oh that's right, I forgot about those Ultrasone offerings. Also, don't forget the ultimate portable headphone, the sennheiser orpheus

My TH600s are my portable cans I take with me on the train. I've changed the pads to HM5s for better isolation and leakage. Been using them for months like this

I had no experience with modding the TH-600 like that so I was speaking purely from my experience with the stock cans. Good to know that modding them that way makes them acceptable for you though, it'll be useful for others thinking of using the TH-600 as portables.
